Marvel Studios has put two Captain Americas on screen in the first full trailer for “Avengers: Doomsday,” pairing Chris Evans’ returning Steve Rogers with Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson as the studio builds toward its biggest crossover since 2019.
The footage debuted at CinemaCon in April before reaching the public. In the online version, Chris Hemsworth’s Thor narrates the closing stretch. It ends with Thor spotting Rogers, who now wears longer hair and can still lift Thor’s hammer. Mackie’s Wilson, the current Captain America, appears alongside Paul Rudd’s Ant-Man and Sebastian Stan’s Winter Soldier. Robert Downey Jr. anchors the threat as Doctor Doom. The trailer shows Doom overpowering Thor, who looks outmatched. The film follows heroes assembling as Doom prepares a war across the multiverse.
The ensemble stretches beyond the Avengers. Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, James Marsden and Rebecca Romijn appear as Professor X, Magneto, Cyclops and Mystique. Channing Tatum’s Gambit and the Fantastic Four and Thunderbolts also join. One commentator noted that some heroes fight one another in the footage, likely from an early misunderstanding.
The campaign has divided fans. Four earlier teasers, released after screenings of “Avatar: Fire and Ash,” skipped action for quieter moments, including a fatherhood scene for Evans’ character and a prayer from Thor. Joe Russo defended the approach, saying each teaser carries story information and that “Doomsday has already started for you.”
Anthony and Joe Russo, who directed “Infinity War” and “Endgame,” return for both “Doomsday” and “Avengers: Secret Wars.” The film marks the first Avengers movie since “Endgame” in 2019. “Secret Wars” follows on Dec. 17, 2027. Competition looms. “Doomsday” opens Dec. 18, the same day as “Dune 3.” Plot details stay thin even after the trailer, a restraint that leaves the true scope of Doom’s plan for audiences to learn in theaters.
