Sometimes, video game narratives can be incredibly captivating. For those who are enamored with Diablo IV’s Lilith, they now have the chance to demonstrate their devotion. Blizzard has transformed a real-life cathedral, complete with an immense, infernal masterpiece.
A Monstrous Work of Art
Under the guidance of Diablo IV Art Director John Mueller, an enormous work of art has been crafted to adorn the ceiling of an entire cathedral.
Spanning over 220 square meters, the artwork depicts the journey of Diablo IV’s hero and their eventual encounter with the demonic ruler Lilith.
The Diablo series is known for its dark, Gothic art style, and this grand painting on the cathedral ceiling stays true to that aesthetic.
Diablo 4 and the ‘Desecrated’ Church for Demonic Purposes
You might be wondering what kind of pact Blizzard had to forge with the devil to secure permission to embellish a church with demonic artwork.
Rest assured, the “Chapelle des Jésuites” in Cambrai, France, was deconsecrated long ago, losing its religious purpose. For almost 70 years, the former church has served as a museum, hosting various exhibitions.
When and Where to See the Artwork
Those eager to witness the artwork in person can visit the cathedral in Cambrai between 2:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. until June 11, 2023.
If you happen to be in France during this time, consider making a pilgrimage to the Chapelle des Jésuites to pay homage to the one true ruler.
What are your thoughts on this endeavor? Is it an impressive and exciting project? Or should a cathedral—even a desecrated one—be off-limits for such purposes?
