Microsoft and developer Asobo want to put Flight Simulator players at ease by assuring them that the current 2020 release will continue to receive updates, despite the recent announcement of a standalone sequel slated for 2024.

The announcement of a new game had raised doubts among fans, as Microsoft Flight Simulator head Jorg Neumann had previously promised 10 years of support for the current version.

Clearing Up Confusion and Controversy

Back in 2019, well before the release of Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020, Jorg Neumann expressed the studio’s intention to support the sim for a decade. This commitment has been reiterated periodically since then, leaving players puzzled after the recent Xbox Games Showcase reveal of a standalone sequel for 2024.

This confusion was compounded by Neumann’s earlier hints about exciting new features, such as cargo delivery jobs, which seemed to relate to the current game.

To address the mounting concerns and alleviate the growing controversy, Jorg Neumann published a FAQ on the Flight Simulator website, offering clarification on the ongoing support for the 2020 release. He emphasizes that Flight Simulator 2024 will be a separate and next-generation sequel, not an update for the existing game.

Continued Compatibility and Add-Ons

Neumann confirms that the 2024 release will include the current aircraft and airports available in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020.

Furthermore, virtually all add-ons purchased from the game’s paid store will be supported in the new sequel, ensuring that players won’t need to repurchase their add-ons. This news should provide some relief for fans concerned about the compatibility of their existing content.

Ongoing Support and Future Updates

Microsoft Flight Simulator

As for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020, developer Asobo remains committed to delivering its roadmap for the game. This roadmap encompasses various updates, including Aircraft and Avionics Updates, Sim Updates, City and World Updates, and the recently announced free Dune DLC.

Even after the launch of Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, Asobo will continue to support the 2020 version, ensuring that players can continue to enjoy their experience with ongoing updates and improvements.

While these reassurances should alleviate some worries among Flight Simulator 2020 players, questions still linger about the exact nature of the support the current game will receive once the roadmap concludes and Flight Simulator 2024 is released.

Asobo’s initial response may feel somewhat vague or incomplete until they are ready to provide more direct answers to these concerns.
