Diablo 4, the highly anticipated action RPG, is undergoing a substantial transformation with a new update released alongside the “Season of Blood” on October 17th. The cornerstone of this update is a major revision to the way damage is computed within the game.
Previously, Critical Strike Damage and Vulnerable Damage were calculated independently, enabling players to harness these attributes to unleash colossal damage output. However, Blizzard’s new approach merges these two damage components, capping Critical Strike Damage at 50 percent and Vulnerable Damage at 20 percent.
Both now contribute to a “baseline multiplicative bonus” in which bonus damage figures are aggregated and then multiplied by these fixed percentages.
Blizzard’s motive behind this change is to foster a more balanced diversity in character builds, preventing players from relying exclusively on skills with these specific damage outputs.
As Blizzard stated in the patch notes, “This change is not intended to lower the power of the best builds, but rather allow more builds to reach that same level of power.”
The development team at Blizzard has also introduced several mechanics to encourage players to explore alternative stats for multiplicative bonuses, rather than constantly pursuing Critical Strike and Vulnerable Damage.

Beyond the fundamental change to damage calculations, the update offers various improvements to the game’s user interface. Players can now mark items as “Favourite,” safeguarding them from accidental selling or salvaging, a feature that extends to the Stash.
Searching and filtering capabilities have been integrated into the Stash, a valuable addition, particularly considering the return of season one items. Streamer mode, enabling players to conceal identifying information, has been implemented.
Additional enhancements include an auto-run feature, an expanded minimap for a broader view, more discernible cursor icons with higher contrast, and various other minor adjustments.
This extensive update includes various other additions, such as the introduction of new unique items and Legendary Aspects, adjustments to Paragon Glyphs, enhancements to Nightmare Dungeons, and refinements in item enchanting processes. Moreover, players can expect an improvement in the functionality of mounts, as they are now less prone to getting stuck.
