Destiny 2’s ‘The Final Shape’ Expansion Promises Subclass Mixing and New Enemy Faction, But Not the End of the Franchise

As Destiny 2 players prepare for the highly anticipated release of The Final Shape expansion in June, the developers at Bungie have unveiled a number of tantalizing details about what awaits them in this climactic chapter of the Light and Darkness saga.

In a recent livestream, the team shared first looks at some of the major new features and content coming in The Final Shape. Perhaps most exciting is the reveal of a brand new subclass called Prismatic, which will allow players to seamlessly blend Light and Dark abilities for the first time.

“This is the ultimate form of being a Guardian – to wield Light and Darkness at the same time,” said Catarina Macedo, The Final Shape’s project lead. The Prismatic subclass represents a bold new direction for player customization and sandbox experimentation in Destiny 2.

But the innovations don’t stop there. The Final Shape will also introduce Destiny 2’s first new enemy faction since the Forsaken expansion in 2018 – a mysterious collective known as The Dread. This new threat will include a variety of dangerous new foes, from flying “Grim” enemies armed with guns, to acrobatic “Husk” melee bruisers, to “Weavers” and “Attendants” that wield Strand and Stasis powers.

“When you see these new characters, not only do they look unique and new, but you see a throughline that we’ve been building through the years that connects it all together,” said art director Dave Samuel.

These dramatic additions to Destiny 2’s sandbox have understandably got players buzzing. However, some may have been concerned that The Final Shape could mark the end of the long-running franchise. Executive creative director Luke Smith moved quickly to quell those fears, assuring that this expansion is not the conclusion.

“Facing The Witness is not the end of Destiny 2, and it’s definitely not the end of Destiny,” Smith declared. “After you face The Witness, we’re going to tell you what’s coming next to Destiny 2… and beyond.”

Destiny 2: The Final Shape

This promise of a future beyond The Final Shape’s climactic events will undoubtedly be a relief to the Destiny community, many of whom have been invested in the game since the original launched in 2014. While the details of Destiny’s post-Final Shape direction remain unclear, Bungie appears committed to continuing to evolve and expand this beloved shared-world shooter experience.

With the fusion of Light and Dark powers, the introduction of a formidable new enemy faction, and the assurance that this is not the end, Destiny 2: The Final Shape is shaping up to be an ambitious and consequential chapter in the ongoing Destiny saga. Guardians everywhere will no doubt be eager to see how it all unfolds when the expansion launches on June 4th.
