Helldivers 2: The Untold Story of a Gaming Catastrophe

How a once-beloved game became embroiled in a global backlash over restrictive account requirements.

In a stunning turn of events, Helldivers 2, once hailed as a gaming triumph, has found itself at the center of a global backlash that has tarnished its reputation and cast doubt on its future. The highly anticipated sequel to the popular multiplayer action game, developed by Arrowhead Game Studio and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE), was an instant success upon its release in February 2024, earning critical acclaim and selling an estimated 8 million copies by March.

However, the game’s fortunes took a dramatic turn on May 6th when SIE announced that all new players on Steam would be required to connect their accounts to the PlayStation Network (PSN). Existing Steam players would face a mandatory PSN login starting May 30th. This decision, which caught many fans off-guard, sparked widespread outrage and confusion, particularly in countries where PSN is not available.

Helldivers 2 is no longer purchasable in 177 countries where PSN is not available (but some are still available like Baltics).

The backlash was swift and severe. Helldivers 2 was abruptly pulled from sale in around 177 countries, including notable markets like Egypt, Georgia, Jamaica, and Morocco, where PSN access is unavailable. Japan, a major gaming hub, was also initially listed among the affected countries, though it appears to have a separate package.

As the controversy unfolded, Helldivers 2’s review score on Steam plummeted to “Overwhelmingly Negative” amid a massive review bombing campaign by disgruntled fans. Independent developer Rami Ismail took to X/Twitter to criticize Sony’s decision, stating, “What a clusterf*ck. For all my criticism of Steam — it’s incredible that they’re choosing to take the hit for Sony’s nonsense to ensure nobody ends up with an unusable game because of PlayStation’s super limited accessibility globally. Absolutely terrible decision-making by Sony.”

Arrowhead’s CEO, Johan Pilestedt, found himself in the unenviable position of trying to placate an enraged fanbase while acknowledging the studio’s limited control over the situation. In a series of X/Twitter posts, he apologized for the controversy and expressed hope that the studio could regain the community’s trust. Pilestedt also revealed that Arrowhead was “talking solutions with PlayStation, especially for non-PSN countries,” but ultimately did not have the final say.

The Helldivers 2 controversy has highlighted the challenges of navigating the complex dynamics between game developers, publishers, and platform holders, as well as the potential consequences of imposing restrictive requirements on a global audience. As the gaming industry continues to evolve, this cautionary tale serves as a reminder of the importance of transparency, communication, and prioritizing the needs and expectations of players worldwide.
