“Outer Range” Canceled by Amazon After Two Seasons, Leaving Fans and Critics Divided

Amazon Studios has officially canceled “Outer Range,” the mind-bending sci-fi Western starring Josh Brolin, after just two seasons. The series, which blended elements of paranormal mystery with rugged rural drama, will not return for a third season on Prime Video, as confirmed by an individual close to the decision.

Created by Brian Watkins and executive produced by a team including Brad Pitt, the show followed Royal Abbott (Brolin), a Wyoming rancher fighting for his land and family after discovering a mysterious dark void on his property. The second season, which premiered on May 16, delved deeper into the Abbott family’s struggles following the disappearance of their granddaughter, raising the stakes and intensifying the enigma surrounding them.

Despite boasting a star-studded cast including Imogen Poots, Lili Taylor, and Will Patton, “Outer Range” struggled to capture widespread audience attention. While it did appear on Nielsen’s streaming charts for several weeks, it failed to achieve the level of success seen by other Amazon originals like “Fallout,” which recently broke records with Prime Video’s second-largest debut ever.

The series received mixed reviews from critics and audiences alike. IndieWire’s initial review described it as appealing to “people who were fans of ‘Yellowstone’ but wished the series was more like ‘Lost.'” However, some critics, like JoBlo’s Alex Maidy, praised the show’s complexity and genre-blending narrative, calling it “the weirdest show you’re not watching.”

“Outer Range” underwent changes between its two seasons, including a switch in showrunners from Zev Borow to Charles Murray. The production team made significant efforts to transform their New Mexico shooting location into a convincing Wyoming setting, building many sets from scratch to achieve the desired atmosphere.

The cancellation comes as a disappointment to the show’s dedicated fanbase, who appreciated its unique blend of sci-fi elements with Western themes. The series tackled concepts such as multiverses and parallel timelines, offering what some viewers found to be an immersive and intellectually engaging experience.

As streaming platforms continue to evaluate their content strategies, “Outer Range” joins a growing list of shows cut short despite critical acclaim or niche audience appeal. The decision underscores the challenges faced by complex, genre-defying series in an increasingly competitive and crowded streaming landscape.

For fans of “Outer Range,” the cancellation leaves several storylines unresolved, adding the show to the pantheon of cult series that end on cliffhangers. While the void at the edge of the Abbott ranch may remain unexplored, the series’ bold storytelling and ambitious scope will likely be remembered by those who appreciated its unique vision.
