The new disaster movie “Twisters” has been blowing away box office records since it came out! Projections show it made around $74.6 million its first weekend, which would break the all-time opening record for movies about storms. That record is currently held by “The Day After Tomorrow” from 2004.
Directed by Lee Isaac Chung, who directed the small hit “Minari,” “Twisters” stars Glen Powell, Daisy Edgar-Jones and Anthony Ramos. It’s a sequel to the mega-popular 1996 tornado movie “Twister.” Audiences really seem to be loving it – it got an A- on CinemaScore and a 92% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Even with tough comparisons to last year when “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” came out at the same time, “Twisters” has still done great. It’s helped make up the difference at the box office from 2022. The movie has also appealed to both men and women of all ages. Especially in the states that actually get tornadoes a lot, like Oklahoma where parts were filmed.
“Twisters'” success has shuffled things up in the rankings. “Despicable Me 4” moved to second place making $23.8 million, and “Inside Out 2” stayed strong in third with $12-13 million. That Pixar sequel is on track to become the highest-grossing animated film worldwide ever!
The scary movie “Longlegs” has been hanging on in its second weekend too, while “A Quiet Place: Day One” made around $5.7 million to round out the top five. “Fly Me to the Moon” dropped off a lot though.
This is huge for the stars and director of “Twisters.” It proves Lee Isaac Chung can do big budget blockbusters just as well as indie films. All eyes will now be on how long “Twisters” can keep this momentum at the box office!
