Gran Turismo 7 has made fans of the franchise, professionals and organizations such as the International Automobile Federation unhappy, and the FIA decided to leave the franchise aside for the 2022 FIA Motorsport Games and bet on Assetto Corsa.
Following much speculation from the community, the FIA chose to talk about it and explain what is really happening with its relationship with Gran Turismo.
FIA Director of Innovative Sports Activities Frederic Bertrand said that they will resume their relationship with the PlayStation saga, but not during this year and on the condition that Gran Turismo 7 improves.
FIA Will Give Gran Turismo a Vote of Confidence in 2023
Mr. Bertrand revealed something important: FIA talked with Kazunori Yamauchi, who is in charge of the franchise, to pause their alliance until Gran Turismo 7 improves and is ready for professional circuits. However, FIA will give another vote of confidence to the series and resume their relationship in a few months.
Thus, it is a fact that the new installment is not part of the 2022 FIA Motorsport Game. It is expected that the organization and Yamauchi will work together again in early 2023. Meanwhile, they will work on other projects which was not delved into.
“It’s not over. For Motorsport Games, what the difficulty we had at the time is that they weren’t necessarily ready to support the live event like we wanted to, because of GT7 and everything. So we agreed with them that we would work with Assetto Corsa. It’s also easier for us, because it’s more open to a lot of countries.
“But we are still working with Gran Turismo on many other projects. So no, it’s not an end. It’s just an acceptance of the non-exclusive approach, and we think e-sports should be more open. That’s what we agreed with Kazunori-san,” the executive explained.
Polyphony Digital is going to have to work hard for a chance to restart the partnership in 2023, as the FIA will send representatives to monitor the state of the game next weekend when an event will be held.
Bertrand stressed that the pause was a decision by both parties, so the FIA can keep up with its competitions and the developer can focus on improving its critically-criticized game.
“I’ll send my guys and if we think it’s ready, we’ll go ahead. And then we’ll probably have another project at the beginning of the first quarter of next year with Gran Turismo,” Bertrand concluded.
