AI in Hollywood: Tom Hanks Talks Digital Presence in Movies Post-Death

A Reflection of Modern Times

Acclaimed actor Tom Hanks, renowned for his Oscar-winning performances in ‘Forrest Gump’ and ‘Philadelphia’, acknowledges that the advent of artificial intelligence (AI) and deep fake technology will bring about significant transformations in the acting industry.

Not only does he contemplate the likelihood of his digital presence in films posthumously, but he also considers the potential of being digitally de-aged for future roles.

This would not be an entirely novel occurrence. Let’s look back at the upcoming film ‘Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny,’ due to hit cinemas on June 30. In this movie, Harrison Ford, now 80 years old, reprises his iconic role.

However, for the opening sequence, the filmmakers opted to digitally recreate the image of a youthful Ford. Hanks candidly admitted that he had anticipated such technological advancements in the industry.

The Evolution of Digital Recording and its Implications

“The Polar Express, which premiered in 2004, was the first film that extensively digitally recorded us, capturing our appearances in detail,” Hanks shared during The Adam Buxton Podcast. “We anticipated such developments. We envisioned the transformation of computer data into a face or character becoming a reality. Since then, this technology has evolved exponentially, and we see it being utilized extensively.”

Hanks adds, “Today, anyone can digitally recreate themselves at any age, thanks to AI or deepfake technology. If I were to meet an untimely end tomorrow, my characters could live on indefinitely. Except for the knowledge that AI and deepfake technology exist, nothing would hint that the person on-screen isn’t actually me. The authenticity will be convincingly high. It will pose not just artistic challenges, but legal ones as well.”

Discover the Artistic Genius of Bradley Cooper in ‘Maestro’: “Immerse yourself in the world of Leonard Bernstein and witness Bradley Cooper’s transformative performance. Read our in-depth review of ‘Maestro’, a film that blends music, passion, and cinematic brilliance.”

Legal Implications and Audience Perception

The actor revealed that “all guilds, agencies, and law firms” are currently engrossed in discussions about “the legal ramifications of owning one’s face and voice as intellectual property.”

It’s noteworthy that the first-ever TV series employing deep fake technology has already been produced, featuring digital recreations of stars from sports, culture, and music. This innovative production sparked considerable controversy at the time, given its use of the actual voices of famous personalities.

Tom Hanks underscores that “without a doubt, audiences will be able to discern when a performance is the product of AI. The real question, however, is whether they will care. There’s a portion of the audience that might not be bothered by it.”
