In a resounding endorsement from one of the most revered filmmakers in the sci-fi genre, Steven Spielberg has lavished high praise on Denis Villeneuve’s ‘Dune: Part Two,’ calling it “one of the most brilliant science-fiction films” he has ever seen. The legendary director’s words carry immense weight, considering his contributions to the genre with groundbreaking classics like ‘E.T: Extra Terrestrial’ and ‘Close Encounters of the Third Kind.’

Spielberg’s effusive praise came during a Q&A session on ‘The Director’s Cut Podcast’ at the DGA Theater in Los Angeles, where he shared the stage with Villeneuve to discuss the highly anticipated sequel. “It’s an honor for me to sit here and talk to you,” Spielberg said, before crowning ‘Dune: Part Two’ as one of the greatest sci-fi films in his illustrious career.

Continuing his admiration for Villeneuve’s work, Spielberg acknowledged the Canadian filmmaker’s mastery in world-building, placing him among the ranks of acclaimed directors such as Stanley Kubrick, George Lucas, Tim Burton, and James Cameron. “Let me start by saying there are filmmakers who are the builders of worlds. It’s not a long list, and we know who a lot of them are,” Spielberg stated. “The list goes on, and I deeply, fervently believe that you are one of its newest members.”

Villeneuve, visibly humbled by Spielberg’s high praise, expressed his gratitude for the compliment, particularly from a director whose works have shaped the sci-fi genre. Spielberg’s endorsement is all the more significant given his reputation for pushing the boundaries of storytelling and technical innovation in filmmaking.

The ‘Jurassic Park’ helmer went on to highlight specific moments in ‘Dune: Part Two’ that left a lasting impression on him, such as the scene where Paul Atreides rides a sandworm for the first time. “This is a desert-loving story, but for such a desert-loving film, there is such a yearning for water in this movie,” Spielberg remarked. “You film the desert to resemble an ocean, a sea. The sandworms were like sea serpents. And that scene surfing the sandworms is one of the greatest things I have ever seen. Ever!”

Steven Spielberg

Spielberg’s admiration for ‘Dune: Part Two’ echoes the positive reception the film has received from critics and audiences alike. The sequel, starring Timothée Chalamet, Austin Butler, Zendaya, and Florence Pugh, has proven to be a box office success, grossing over $570 million worldwide.

With Spielberg’s seal of approval, ‘Dune: Part Two’ has solidified its place among the pantheon of great science-fiction films, a testament to Villeneuve’s visionary storytelling and world-building prowess. As the movie continues its theatrical run, Spielberg’s resounding endorsement will undoubtedly resonate with audiences and further cement the film’s legacy within the genre.
