The extraordinary story of Sally Hafez, the Lebanese woman who gained global attention by holding up a bank with a toy gun to access her own savings for medical treatment, is set for a multi-faceted adaptation from Dubai-based Front Row Productions.
Front Row has secured the rights to bring Hafez’s compelling narrative to life across feature films, TV series, docuseries, and podcast formats. The company aims to explore the “various angles” of Hafez’s journey from activist to desperate citizen taking matters into her own hands against a “patriarchal and corrupt system.”
In September 2022, amid Lebanon’s crippling financial crisis that froze millions of people’s savings, 28-year-old Hafez entered a Beirut bank branch brandishing her nephew’s toy pistol. Accompanied by protesters from the group Depositors’ Outcry, she demanded $12,000 from her locked account to fund her sister’s cancer treatment after being allowed just $200 monthly withdrawals.
Hafez’s defiant act, driven by a lack of access to her own money, sparked an outpouring of support across Lebanon. Videos documenting her plight racked up over 15 million views as many identified with her struggle against a “patriarchal and corrupt” system failing its citizens.
“Sally’s story is as remarkable as it is painful,” said Front Row founders Gianluca Chakra and Mario Haddad. “It is an example of triumph over the demoralizing reality that many hard-working citizens find themselves in.”
For Hafez, the deal allows her gripping personal tale of perseverance to be authentically told: “It was important to me that my story gets told by people who understand what Lebanon is going through, and that is something I found with the Front Row team.”
The multimedia adaptation furthers Front Row’s mission to elevate narratives from the MENA region to global audiences, following successes like Netflix’s Perfect Strangers Arabic remake.
