Horror fans feeling fatigued by a lack of creativity and abundance of soulless movie tie-ins in recent years can finally breathe a sigh of relief. At Summer Game Fest 2024, Blumhouse Games provided a jolt of terror and excitement with an utterly surprising showcase of upcoming indie horror titles that radically reimagines what to expect from the genre.
Known for hit horror movies like Megan, Five Nights at Freddy’s, and The Black Phone, the assumption was that Blumhouse’s first major game publishing initiative would simply adapt its popular film franchises into derivative interactive experiences. But the company decisively subverted expectations by instead revealing six wildly imaginative and distinct horror projects from smaller independent developers.
From a retro-stylized folk horror FPS where “weapons are thirsty for blood, not bullets” to an enigmatic FMV collaboration between genre juggernauts Sam Barlow and Brandon Cronenberg promising an unprecedented gameplay innovation, Blumhouse’s slate casts an undeniably wide and enticing web of frights.
Other memorable highlights include a vibrant yet morbid farm/dating sim hybrid starring actual serial killers, a mind-bending “psychedelic horror” set in Earth’s far future, and a meta narrative horror where the protagonist is seemingly able to manipulate the very world around them.
Blumhouse’s eyebrow-raising departure from conventional movie-based cash grabs was very much by design according to the showcase. While some of the most creative and exciting horror games in recent years like Graveyard Keeper and In Sound Mind have originated from independent studios, the AAA space has sorely lacked innovation outside of multiplayer offerings like Dead by Daylight.
By signing projects from smaller teams rather than resting on its laurels with established properties, Blumhouse seems determined to give passionate developers the resources and platform to bring their demented visions to life. It’s a bold gambit, but one that has already paid dividends in renewing interest and enthusiasm across the horror gaming community.
From pulpy B-movies to smash hit psychological chillers, Blumhouse has continually proven adept at identifying and amplifying fresh creative voices in the horror arena. Its first major game slate looks poised to continue that tradition in electrifying fashion by opening a doorway into gaming’s unsettling indie underworld. Terror has finally been revived.
