Apple TV+ has been on a roll lately with its original sci-fi shows. Their newest series Sunny, starring Rashida Jones, is another hit that’s got people talking.
Sunny tells the story of a widow living in Japan who gets a robot companion. It mixes humor with heavy themes about loss and artificial intelligence. Critics love how Jones plays her character – understated but really captures her grief.
Audience reviews have been overwhelmingly positive too, with Sunny scoring 87% on Rotten Tomatoes. That makes it Apple TV+’s highest rated sci-fi show of the year. Their other 2024 sci-fi releases like Sugar and Dark Matter also did well.
Not everyone is fully sold on the robot sidekick though. Some feel it’s a bit too cartoony for the realistic world. But most agree the story and production quality are top-notch.
The success of Sunny comes at a good time. Earlier Apple TV+ sci-fi shows like Invasion were more divisive. This had some questioning if they could consistently deliver great sci-fi.
Clearly they’ve proven that now with past hits like Severance and Silo. Along with Sunny, Apple TV+ is staking its claim as an important player in streaming sci-fi. Their willingness to take chances on weird concepts seems to be paying off.
As they ramp up more seasons of fan favorites, it looks like sci-fi watchers will have lots to enjoy on Apple TV+. The real test will be keeping up this momentum with consistently great shows in the future. New episodes of Sunny drop every Wednesday – definitely worth checking out!
