Oscar-winning actress Lupita Nyong’o has revealed that her latest role in “A Quiet Place: Day One” served as an unexpected source of emotional healing following the loss of her friend and “Black Panther” co-star, Chadwick Boseman.

In the Michael Sarnoski-directed prequel to the popular “Quiet Place” franchise, Nyong’o portrays Sam, a poet battling terminal cancer amidst an alien invasion. The actress admitted to People magazine that tackling such a character was initially “daunting” and “scary,” as it required her to delve deep into the psyche of someone “facing their mortality.”

However, Nyong’o found that the role took on a profoundly personal significance in light of Boseman’s passing in August 2020 from colon cancer at the age of 43. “In the end, it was actually very therapeutic because I had just experienced not too many years ago the death of Chadwick Boseman, which shook me to my core,” Nyong’o explained. “I definitely was thinking about that a lot.”

The experience of portraying Sam led Nyong’o to a poignant realization about mortality and living intentionally. “What I came to realize is that it’s really important to be reminded of our mortality because then we live life just a little more intentionally,” she reflected. “When we think we have all the time in the world, we can really take people for granted and experiences for granted.”

This sentiment echoes the heartfelt tribute Nyong’o posted on Instagram shortly after Boseman’s death, where she praised his “immortal energy” and vowed not to waste her time in his honor.

Fans who have seen “A Quiet Place: Day One” have praised Nyong’o’s performance, with many noting the depth and nuance she brings to the role. Some viewers, upon learning of the connection to Boseman, have expressed that it adds another layer of poignancy to her portrayal.

Nyong’o’s candid discussion about finding therapeutic value in her work highlights the complex interplay between personal experiences and artistic expression. It also serves as a touching reminder of Boseman’s lasting impact on his colleagues and friends in the industry.

“A Quiet Place: Day One,” which also stars Joseph Quinn, is currently playing in theaters, offering audiences a glimpse into the early stages of the alien invasion that sets the stage for the franchise’s main storyline.
