Movie critics have shared a range of opinions on Alien: Romulus, the latest film in the long-running Alien sci-fi horror franchise. Directed by Fede Álvarez, Romulus seeks to both honor previous Alien movies and take the series in a new direction. Some reviewers praise how Álvarez weaves elements from all six prior films into a standalone story. Germain Lussier of Gizmodo said it is a “roller coaster ride” that steadily builds fear and tension. Jazz Tangcay of Variety also felt skeptical at first but came to admire elements like practical effects and world-building. Tangcay said the film evoked “genuine fear.”

Other reviewers like Courtney Howard enjoyed how Romulus remains “grimly bleak.” Howard spotlighted strong lead performances from Cailee Spaeny and David Jonsson. The film is set aboard a derelict space station where young colonists encounter the Xenomorph.
Still, some critics express concerns. Leo Rydel of Geekly Goods said it relies too heavily on nostalgia over new ideas. Similarly, Mark McPherson felt thematic elements began to fall apart in the third act. Rob Dean’s review was the most doubtful, saying the emphasis on nostalgia leads to a “hugely disappointing” ending that undercuts the film’s potential.
