Streaming service Hulu is continuing its expansion into original comedy programming with the announcement of a new comedy special from up-and-coming comedian Chris Distefano. Titled “It’s Just Unfortunate,” the one-hour special was executive produced by late night host Jimmy Kimmel. Distefano joins several other prominent comedians who have recently brought their stand-up acts to Hulu, such as Jim Gaffigan, Bill Burr, and Jessica Kirson.
The new special marks Hulu’s latest effort to compete more directly with Netflix in the market for streaming comedy specials. Netflix has long led the way producing and distributing original comedy performances. However, Hulu has been steadily building up its own catalog through deals with comedians, producers, and comedy clubs. Distefano previously released his special “Speshy Weshy” on Netflix in 2022.
Distefano has worked as a comedian for over a decade, gaining experience on MTV shows and developing a large fanbase in New York City. He has sold out shows at prestigious venues like Radio City Music Hall. The Brooklyn native also hosts the Vice TV show “Super Maximum Retro Show” and co-hosted the Netflix series “Ultimate Beastmaster.”
In addition to original productions, Hulu acquires licensing agreements that further expand its library of stand-up content. Deals with companies such as 800 Pound Gorilla, Comedy Dynamics, and Don’t Tell Comedy provide Hulu with specials from many leading and up-and-coming comedians.
An official release date has not yet been set for Distefano’s new special “It’s Just Unfortunate.” However, both comedy fans and industry insiders will be watching to see how the special and Hulu’s comedy catalog as a whole perform going forward. As streaming platforms vie for subscribers, Hulu aims to position itself as a major player in the competitive space of on-demand comedy specials.
