Chris Carter Finally Releases His Original “X-Files” Movie Vision

The director's cut restores horror elements cut for a PG-13 rating in 2008, arriving on Hulu and Disney+ as Ryan Coogler develops a franchise reboot.

Nearly two decades after “The X-Files: I Want to Believe” left theaters to mixed reviews, creator Chris Carter is releasing the version he originally set out to make. “The X-Files: I Want to Believe – Vrach Frankenshteyn,” a darker, R-rated director’s cut of the 2008 film, arrives on Disney+ and Hulu on August 14, alongside the original theatrical release for comparison.

The new subtitle translates roughly from Russian as “Victor Frankenstein,” a nod to the film’s central mystery, which Carter has restructured to lean more heavily into horror. Carter told Entertainment Weekly that studio and ratings pressures kept his original vision from reaching audiences the first time around. “We set out to make a real-life Frankenstein movie, and due to a variety of factors, our Frankenstein never completely left the operating room,” he said. “A chance to apply the electrodes again was a special thrill.”

The original film underperformed critically on release, drawing complaints that it played more like an extended television episode than a feature and struggled without the extraterrestrial mythology that defined the series. Carter has said that 20th Century Fox and the MPA pushed for cuts that secured a PG-13 rating but diluted the horror tone he wanted, and that this new version restores those elements in full.

David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson return as Fox Mulder and Dana Scully, alongside Mitch Pileggi as Walter Skinner, reprising roles from the original film’s story of a string of mysterious abductions. Carter first teased the recut in an interview on the “Fail Better with David Duchovny” podcast, describing his intent plainly: “Now I have a chance to go back and make the scary movie that I always intended to make. It’s not just doing a director’s cut to do a director’s cut.”

The release lands as Hulu develops a separate “X-Files” reboot from Ryan Coogler, who is writing and directing a new pilot starring Danielle Deadwyler and Himesh Patel as agents assigned to a long-dormant division investigating unexplained phenomena. That project’s cast also includes Amy Madigan, Steve Buscemi and Ben Foster, positioning the franchise for a fresh generation of viewers even as Carter revisits his own unfinished business with the property’s past.
