Pharrell Williams’ new animated film “Piece by Piece” debuted at the Toronto International Film Festival Thursday amid controversy over the singer’s use of fur and exotic animal skins. The premiere was disrupted when an animal rights activist protested Williams’ involvement with Louis Vuitton, which uses fur and skins in some of its luxury goods.
“Piece by Piece” tells Williams’ life story through LEGO characters and features voices from musicians like Gwen Stefani, Kendrick Lamar, and Jay-Z. Director Morgan Neville said the animation format captures Williams’ unique perspective on music, including representing his condition of synesthesia, where he sees colors when hearing music.
Williams walked the red carpet with a LEGO version of himself, referring to the film’s innovative style. He told reporters the animation “universalizes the story so anyone from a marginalized background can relate.” Williams also said diversity was important in the LEGO characters.
"It's important that you be who you feel like you are" 🚀

During a question-and-answer session after the screening, a protester from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) approached the stage. She criticized Williams’ involvement with Louis Vuitton and its use of animal furs and skins. Security then removed the activist.
Williams responded, “You’re right. You’re right. God bless you.” PETA later said they would stop disrupting Williams’ events if he stopped using fur and exotic skins. They suggested alternative materials like faux fur. This was not the first protest, as PETA activists had also demonstrated at an earlier screening during the film festival.
Despite the disruption, the premiere continued celebrating Williams’ career and new film. “Piece by Piece” aims to inspire diverse audiences through nostalgic animation and star power. However, the incident highlights ongoing debates around ethics in the luxury industry and Williams’ expanding creative work.
