Acclaimed actor James McAvoy wanted to bring a fresh take to his role in the remake of the Danish film “Speak No Evil.” Rather than viewing the original movie first, McAvoy chose to craft his portrayal without that influence.
The upcoming horror film “Speak No Evil” is a remake of the critically successful 2022 Danish movie of the same name. James McAvoy will star as Patrick, taking on one of his most challenging roles yet. The film is set for release on September 13, 2024 and is directed by James Watkins.
In a recent interview, McAvoy explained why he refrained from watching the original film before production. “I wanted my performance to be my own creation rather than compared to the earlier version,” McAvoy stated. By avoiding the original film, McAvoy believed he wouldn’t have accepted the role if able to view another actor’s take on the character first.
McAvoy continued developing his portrayal throughout filming as well. “I only watched the Danish film after we wrapped to avoid being influenced during the process,” he commented. This approach allowed McAvoy to focus solely on his interpretation without preconceived notions.
The remake follows an American couple, Ben and Louise, who move to London and encounter an charming local family, Patrick, Ciara, and their son Ant, while vacationing in Italy. What starts as a friendly interaction takes a disturbing turn. McAvoy was intrigued by how the film juxtaposes the couples, describing one relationship as “gray and depressing” while the other seems to have a love “you’d be desperate to have.”
Early reviews have been positive for McAvoy’s unhinged performance. As the September release nears, film fans await seeing how McAvoy’s unique preparation method helps shape an acclaimed story for new audiences in an exciting new way. The actor strived to bring something fresh to the role while retaining the integrity of the original chilling plot.
