A new film released by Netflix dramatizes the shocking true story of a serial killer’s appearance on a popular dating show in the 1970s, long before his horrific crimes were uncovered. “Woman of the Hour” recounts Rodney Alcala’s 1978 spot on “The Dating Game,” where he charmed viewers and a contestant despite his dark history of violence.
Directed by Anna Kendrick, “Woman of the Hour” tells the story of Cheryl Bradshaw, the woman who selected Alcala as her match on the show. At the time, Bradshaw found Alcala “very strange” and ultimately declined a date with him. Her instincts were right, though she could not have known it – Alcala had already attacked multiple victims and would go on to kill many more in subsequent years.
Born in 1943, Alcala’s criminal acts started in 1968 with the assault of an 8-year-old girl. He was later convicted of child molestation but received a light sentence. From 1977 to 1979, investigators confirmed Alcala murdered six women and girls ranging from 12 to 32 years old. He would often use his work as a freelance photographer to lure victims.
When Alcala appeared on “The Dating Game” a decade later, his friendly demeanor and flattering comments disguised the truth. However, his suggestions and remarks about nighttime took on a darker side once his violent history was uncovered. Kendrick’s film shines a light on this disturbing contrast between Alcala’s charming TV persona and the heinous acts he had already committed.
After the show, as more evidence emerged through the years, Alcala was convicted multiple times for various murders and sentenced to death. He died in 2021 while still incarcerated, having spent over 40 years behind bars. “Woman of the Hour” aims to bring this disturbing true crime story to new audiences, and to encourage reflection on screening processes for television participants.
