The Busan International Film Festival in South Korea opened this year with an unexpected and controversial choice – an action thriller produced by Netflix. “Uprising” marks the first time the prestigious festival has selected a film distributed by a major streaming service to launch the event.
Typically, the Busan festival highlights independent films looking for international exposure. Festival director Park Dosin said they hoped to try “a more obviously popular film” to kick off the proceedings. However, some in the Korean film industry argue this sets a troubling precedent for an event devoted to independent cinema.
Produced by Netflix and directed by Kim Sang-man, “Uprising” features a star-studded Korean cast including Gang Dong-won and Park Jeong-min. The historical action thriller will debut on Netflix’s streaming platform shortly after its festival screening. This bypasses a traditional theatrical release and emphasizes Netflix’s growing role in the Korean entertainment market.
While Netflix has invested in successful Korean content in the past, its impact on the local film industry is debated. The streaming giant can disrupt standard distribution models that movie theaters rely on. However, director Kim Sang-man noted that technological changes are normal and the film industry is not disappearing.
Even renowned director Park Chan-wook, who co-wrote the script, could not avoid the controversy. His screenplay was praised by Kim for its “craft and detail.” Nevertheless, Park Chan-wook’s involvement added complexity, as the festival normally celebrates independent works.
In the end, festival director Park Dosin reasserted their dedication to independent cinema. However, the “Uprising” debate highlights tensions between streaming and traditional film methods. As platforms like Netflix invest in original content, the line between movies and online videos becomes increasingly blurred. How other festivals approach similar issues may depend on the results from Busan’s bold decision to kick off with the controversial Netflix thriller.
