Acclaimed actress Leighton Meester has joined the cast of the Apple TV+ period drama “The Buccaneers” for its upcoming second season. Meester, best known for playing Blair Waldorf on the hit series “Gossip Girl”, was spotted on the show’s set in Scotland as filming nears completion.
TheBuccaneers tells the story of five independent American women navigating life in 1870s London high society. In season one, the women began to find their own power and influence, though main character Nan, played by Kristine Frøseth, discovered this newfound freedom came with compromises.
Meester will take on an unknown role in the star-studded ensemble cast which already includes Christina Hendricks, Mia Threapleton, and Guy Remmers. While details of her character are being kept under wraps, Meester is a natural fit for the show’s exploration of women navigating romance, social change, and contradictory expectations of gender at the time. Since her long-running role on Gossip Girl, Meester has shown versatility across different genres from comedy to thriller.

Season one was praised for its nuanced adaptation of author Edith Wharton’s 1925 novel of the same name. The season left lingering storylines about identity, forbidden love, and finding purpose. Show creator Katherine Jakeways has laid the groundwork for another dramatic season as London underwent changes in the 1870s. Fans will be eager to see how the established characters mature against this backdrop of change.
With its addition of the widely known Meester, The Buccaneers season two appears primed to captivate audiences once again with its tale of ambitious women forging their destinies despite limitations of their era when it releases on Apple TV+, even though it marks a change of pace for Meester from her previous work.
