Cameron Diaz wants to play her role in the 1994 hit film The Mask again, but only if her original co-star Jim Carrey returns. Diaz discussed the effect of The Mask on her career and her willingness to return for a sequel during an interview with Access Hollywood to promote her upcoming Netflix film Back in Action.
Diaz joked, “If Jim is on board, I mean, I’ve been riding those coattails from day one,” referring to how the dream comedy helped her break into the entertainment industry. The film was her first acting role, where she played Tina Carlyle, a nightclub singer caught up in the crazy adventures of Carrey’s character, Stanley Ipkiss. The story is about Ipkiss, a quiet bank teller whose life changes when he finds a magical mask that gives him cartoon-like skills that can change reality.
Diaz’s words match what Carrey recently said about possibly bringing back the franchise. Carrey stated in an interview with ComicBook.com that he would consider a return to the role, but only under the right conditions. “Oh wow, it needs to be the right idea,” he said. “If someone had the right idea, I suppose,” “It’s not just about the money.”
As Diaz returns to acting after a ten-year break, talk about a possible sequel is circulating. The actress shared her motivation for returning to the spotlight with The Graham Norton Show, stating her excitement about working with Jamie Foxx on Back in Action. “If I was going to leave my family for 10 hours a day, I wanted to do it with the most talented man in the entertainment business,” she said.
