Prime Video has officially announced that Jamie Campbell Bower will be joining the cast of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power for its third season. Bower, known for his work in Stranger Things and The Mortal Instruments, will take on a central role as a series regular. Filming is set to begin this spring at Shepperton Studios in the UK.
Bower’s involvement marks a shift from his previous appearances in fantasy franchises. His portrayal of the young Gellert Grindelwald in the Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts films was limited to brief moments, leaving little room for development. In contrast, The Rings of Power is expected to provide him with a far more substantial role.
A Return to High Fantasy in a Leading Role
Bower has built a career across film, television, and music. His performance as Vecna in Stranger Things earned widespread recognition, and his earlier work includes Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, The Twilight Saga, and Camelot. His ability to take on intense and charismatic roles positions him as a strong addition to The Rings of Power cast.
The Prime Video series has continued expanding its ensemble, and Bower’s inclusion is expected to reinforce its approach to character-driven storytelling. Reports suggest he will portray a “handsome high-born knight” under the working name Arlen. The story will advance into the height of the War of the Elves and Sauron, placing his character within key events of the Second Age.
Possible Characters Bower Could Portray
Several figures from Tolkien’s writings could align with the description of Bower’s role. One possibility is Anárion, the brother of Elendil and co-founder of Gondor, who has yet to appear in the series. His introduction would build on Númenor’s increasing involvement in the larger conflict.
Showrunners J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay also confirmed that Glorfindel and Celeborn will enter the story. Both characters hold important positions in the events of the Second Age. Bower’s past roles and appearance could fit the depiction of one of these Elves. Glorfindel is known for his legendary status as a warrior, while Celeborn’s history ties directly to Galadriel.
The series has introduced original characters alongside established ones, making it possible that Bower’s role will be a new addition to the lore. With past seasons blending both approaches, his character may develop in a way that connects existing elements of Tolkien’s world with fresh perspectives.
A Strengthened Cast for Season 3
Alongside Bower, Eddie Marsan has been cast in a recurring role. Marsan’s career spans television and film, including projects such as Ray Donovan, Deadpool 2, and The World’s End. His addition adds further depth to the cast as the series prepares for its next phase.
Prime Video has positioned The Rings of Power as one of its most significant productions, with a global audience exceeding 170 million viewers. The first season marked the platform’s biggest television premiere, and the second season continued drawing strong viewership. With filming set to begin soon, the cast expansion signals the next steps for the series as it moves deeper into Middle-earth’s Second Age.
