Mikey Madison won the Best Actress Oscar on Sunday night for her performance in Anora. The film, directed by Sean Baker, was among the night’s most recognized titles, also winning Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Film Editing.
Emma Stone announced Madison’s name, and the actress appeared taken aback as she took the stage. “This is very surreal,” she said. “I grew up in Los Angeles, but Hollywood always felt so far away from me, so to be here, standing in this room today, is really incredible.”
She acknowledged her fellow nominees, including Demi Moore (The Substance), Fernanda Torres (I’m Still Here), Cynthia Erivo (Wicked), and Karla Sofía Gascón (Emilia Pérez). “I want to recognize the thoughtful, intelligent, beautiful, breathtaking work of my fellow nominees. I’m honored to be recognized alongside all of you,” she said.
During her speech, Madison spoke about the sex worker community, a group she worked with while preparing for her role. “I just want to recognize and honor the sex worker community. I will continue to support and be an ally. All of the incredible people, the women that I’ve had the privilege of meeting from that community have been one of the highlights of this incredible experience,” she said.
Her performance in Anora has drawn attention for its depth and preparation. To bring authenticity to the role, Madison learned Russian, trained as a dancer, and performed her own stunts. The film follows Ani, a sex worker who marries the son of a Russian oligarch during a trip to Las Vegas. When his family learns of the marriage, they attempt to intervene, setting off a chain of events that drives the story forward.
Baker, who also addressed the sex worker community in his speech after winning Best Director, collaborated closely with Madison on the project. The film’s recognition throughout awards season solidified its presence at the Academy Awards.
Madison’s path to the Oscar remained uncertain throughout the season. Demi Moore won Best Actress at the Golden Globes, Critics’ Choice Awards, and SAG Awards, while Madison took top honors at the BAFTAs and the Spirit Awards.
She previously addressed the sex worker community at the BAFTAs, saying, “I just want to say that I see you. You deserve respect and human decency. I will always be a friend and ally.”
