“South Park” vanished from Paramount+ libraries across Europe, Latin America, Australia, and parts of Asia on Thursday after the streamer’s international license lapsed, a Paramount+ support agent told a Reddit user who noticed hundreds of episodes had disappeared from the “Continue Watching” queue. Viewers in the United States remain unaffected because domestic rights sit with Comedy Central and a separate Paramount+ agreement that began July 1.
Paramount+ said the takedown was required once “the window in which we have the rights to carry the series” closed, but did not clarify whether a renewal is imminent. The expiration arrives in the middle of a long-running legal fight: Warner Bros. Discovery sued Paramount Global in 2023, claiming breach of a 2019 U.S. streaming deal, and in January a New York judge allowed an unjust-enrichment count to proceed to discovery.
Under the 2019 pact, HBO Max (now Max) paid a reported $500 million for exclusive U.S. streaming rights, while a 2021 arrangement let Paramount+ offer the show abroad. That overseas term has now ended without a successor platform, leaving international fans with no legal way to stream 325 episodes and 48 specials until new rights are struck.
The disruption compounds production turmoil ahead of Season 27, which creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone delayed to July 23 after blaming “studio chaos” tied to Paramount’s pending $8-billion merger with Skydance Media. In a leaked cease-and-desist letter, the pair accused incoming Skydance chief Jeff Shell of pressing for shorter contracts that would lock fresh episodes to Paramount+ just as they were exploring rival bidders.
Industry analysts note that Paramount’s $900-million overall deal with the “South Park” duo runs until 2027, giving both sides incentive to secure a wider international outlet before new installments roll out. For now, frustrated subscribers are circulating petitions and advising newcomers to wait, while archived posts pointing to physical media sales and VPN work-arounds draw thousands of up-votes in fan forums.
