Charisma Carpenter has addressed speculation that she will reprise Cordelia Chase in Hulu’s new Buffy project, saying in a short video that she has not been contacted to appear and that the title of her new podcast is not a coded hint about casting. Her clarification arrives as the franchise moves forward with a pilot centered on a new Slayer, with Sarah Michelle Gellar returning in a recurring role.
Carpenter has spoken warmly about the revival in recent weeks and said she’d welcome the chance to revisit Cordelia, a character whose arc she once described as ending “unjustly” on the spinoff Angel. She has also called the idea of a return “poetic,” noting that the Buffyverse has long treated death as a narrative hurdle rather than a final stop.
The new installment is being developed with Oscar winner Chloé Zhao directing the pilot and Nora and Lilla Zuckerman writing. Ryan Kiera Armstrong will play Nova, the next Slayer, while Gellar both reprises Buffy Summers and serves as an executive producer. Recent behind-the-scenes posts show Gellar training with Armstrong as preparations continue. Casting announcements in recent days have rounded out the pilot’s ensemble.
Context around Carpenter’s status carries added weight because she previously accused the original series’ creator of abusive conduct. That creator is not involved with the new series, which has been framed as a fresh chapter built around a younger lead while making space for legacy characters.
Taken together, Carpenter’s on-camera denial of current involvement, her stated openness to return, and the revival’s active development suggest the door is neither open nor closed.
