“Weapons” is positioned to lead the domestic box office for a second straight weekend as Bob Odenkirk’s “Nobody 2” heads into launch with mid- to low-teens expectations. Industry trackers peg the action sequel’s opening around $8–12 million, with some handicappers stretching the range to $11–16 million, while holdover estimates for “Weapons” cluster near the low-$20 millions after a standout debut.
The Warner Bros. horror thriller opened to $42.5 million in the U.S. and roughly $70 million worldwide last weekend, a strong start for an original, R-rated release in August. As of midweek, the film’s running totals were about $48.8 million domestic and $81.3 million global, signaling healthy weekday interest ahead of its sophomore frame. Produced for roughly $38 million, the picture has quickly moved into profitable territory and remains well placed to capitalize on genre-friendly late-summer play.
“Nobody 2,” opening Friday, arrives with better awareness than its predecessor, which bowed to $6.8 million in March 2021 before finishing at $27.5 million domestic amid pandemic-era constraints. The follow-up again centers on Odenkirk’s everyman-turned-assassin and will test whether the first film’s streaming-driven afterlife translates into theatrical demand. Competition from “Weapons,” which is benefiting from strong word of mouth, and family holdover “Freakier Friday” creates a crowded corridor for the sequel’s debut.
The late-summer frame underscores a broader 2025 pattern: horror continues to deliver efficient returns, while mid-budget action titles rely on brand goodwill and post-theatrical visibility to convert interest into opening-weekend dollars.
Forecasts published Wednesday maintained that “Weapons” should retain the top spot, with probability markets and tracking pointing to “Nobody 2” landing just behind the leader. Daily charts earlier this week also showed “Weapons” holding No. 1 on weekdays, reinforcing the expectation of a comparatively light second-weekend drop for a genre release.
