Jill Freud, Love Actually Actor and Narnia Inspiration, Dies at 98

Jill Freud, the actor and theatre director whose life intersected with both the Narnia novels and Love Actually, has died at the age of 98. Her daughter, broadcaster Emma Freud, announced that she died at home after an evening surrounded by children and grandchildren, describing a characteristically irreverent farewell and saying her mother’s final words were “I love you.”

Born June Beatrice Flewett in London in 1927, she was evacuated during the Second World War to Oxford, where she lived for several years at the home of author C.S. Lewis. The teenager helped keep house at the Kilns and formed a close bond with Lewis, who later paid for her to attend RADA. Friends and biographers have long identified her as a key inspiration for Lucy Pevensie in The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, a connection she is said to have learned about only decades later and received with surprise and pride.

Under the stage name Jill Raymond, she built a busy stage and screen career from the late 1940s onward, appearing in West End productions, television dramas and films. Her final screen role came in 2003 as Pat, the Downing Street housekeeper, in Love Actually, written and directed by her son-in-law Richard Curtis.

Freud’s most sustained impact was in regional theatre. In 1980 she founded Jill Freud and Company, a repertory outfit based in Suffolk that ran summer seasons in Southwold and later Aldeburgh, staging a mix of comedies, classics and new writing. Colleagues recall a producer who championed actors’ rights, raised money for industry charities and insisted that high-quality work should be available outside London, often returning to the same venues year after year to build a local audience.

She married broadcaster and politician Sir Clement Freud in 1950 and was known in public life as Lady Freud, though she kept working on stage and with her company into her later years. The couple had five children, among them journalist Emma Freud and PR executive Matthew Freud, and a large extended family of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Recent tributes from family described her as feisty, mischievous and affectionate, noting that she kept up a daily lunch of red wine and crisps and even joined online tap-dancing classes during the Covid lockdowns in her nineties.
