Michael Michele has exited CBS’s upcoming drama “CIA,” the new offshoot of the “FBI” franchise, in a cast change that lands while the series is in production ahead of its midseason debut. Industry reporting says Michele, announced in September as one of the leads, has left the show. The series centers on a maverick CIA case officer played by Tom Ellis and a by-the-book FBI agent played by Nick Gehlfuss, pairing the agencies at the CIA’s New York Station to tackle domestic threats.
Michele had been set to portray the station chief overseeing the team, a role introduced as part of early casting announcements this fall. A recast is being considered, according to reporting on the production, though no replacement has been named and no reason for the departure has been disclosed.
“CIA” has already weathered a creative reset. Over the summer, Warren Leight stepped in as showrunner, replacing David Hudgins, and the network shifted the series from a planned fall launch to midseason to accommodate the transition. The project remains a centerpiece of the franchise’s reshuffle after CBS ended two sister series, “FBI: International” and “FBI: Most Wanted,” earlier this year while keeping the flagship on the schedule.
Casting moved quickly once cameras were gearing up: Gehlfuss joined alongside Michele in early September to star with Ellis, who headlines the new series. Additional roles have been filled through the fall as production ramped in New York. With Michele’s exit, producers now face a pivotal decision on the character who anchors the show’s command structure, a choice that will shape early episodes and the on-screen dynamic between Ellis and Gehlfuss.
Producers and the network have not released details about next steps. The series continues toward its midseason launch with Ellis and Gehlfuss in the lead, and creative oversight under Leight.
