Disney’s live-action “Moana” is still far from its July 10, 2026 release, yet its first teaser has erupted online. The trailer, posted November 17, generated about 182 million views in its first 24 hours across platforms, according to studio counts cited in industry reports. That total places it as Disney’s second-largest 24-hour launch for a live-action remake, trailing only “The Lion King” teaser, and landing ahead of many recent tentpoles in raw early reach.
The teaser introduces Catherine Laga’aia, an 18-year-old Australian actress of Samoan descent making her feature film debut as Moana. It also confirms Dwayne Johnson’s return as Maui, both on screen and as a producer. The footage mirrors familiar story beats from the 2016 animated film: Moana’s bond with the sea, life on Motunui, a glimpse of the Kakamora, and a short musical moment that signals the remake’s commitment to the original’s song-driven spirit. Thomas Kail directs from a script by Jared Bush and Dana Ledoux Miller, with Mark Mancina back for score work and Lin-Manuel Miranda involved on the music side.
Reaction has been lively and mixed. Many viewers have praised the lead casting and the choice to keep Pacific Islander culture and wayfinding at the story’s center, noting that Auli’i Cravalho, the animated Moana’s voice performer, is serving as an executive producer. At the same time, a visible pocket of fans has questioned why a remake is arriving barely a decade after the animated hit, and so soon after “Moana 2,” which surpassed $1 billion worldwide. Some online comments also target the teaser’s heavy visual-effects sheen, arguing that the new version needs a clearer identity beyond visual replication.
For Disney, the record start underscores how durable the brand remains. The company has leaned hard into franchise certainty during a run of uneven theatrical results, and early digital heat suggests “Moana” still carries cross-generation pull. The next marketing wave will test how that attention translates into box-office momentum next summer.
