Disney’s Zootopia 2 has roared past the $600 million mark at the global box office barely a week after launch, confirming its status as the year’s standout animated performer and one of 2025’s biggest theatrical releases. Updated tracking puts the film around $617 million worldwide through Tuesday, with about $170 million from North America and roughly $447 million from overseas markets.
The sequel exploded out of the gate over the Thanksgiving corridor, delivering a record animated global opening of roughly $556–560 million across its first five days. That haul secured the biggest worldwide start ever for an animated feature and the fourth-largest opening across all films, powered by a $156 million five-day tally in the U.S. and Canada and one of the strongest Thanksgiving starts on record.
Internationally, the story is dominated by China. Zootopia 2 has already cleared $290–300 million there, including more than $100 million on a single Saturday and a five-day run near $272 million, making it the second-biggest foreign debut in the territory after Avengers: Endgame and the top Hollywood release in China since 2019. Local reports credit the film with energizing a sluggish year-end market and helping push China’s box office toward a 50 billion yuan annual target.
The performance reflects a long build-up. The first Zootopia earned over $1 billion worldwide and became a favorite in China; Disney then opened a dedicated Zootopia land at Shanghai Disneyland in 2023 and staged a high-profile local campaign that included a branded airplane tie-in and a premiere attended by CEO Bob Iger. The sequel’s release during the Year of the Snake, alongside a prominent new snake character voiced by Ke Huy Quan, gave marketers another hook for Chinese audiences.
For Hollywood, the numbers arrive in a market that still trails pre-pandemic highs, with annual domestic ticket sales lagging 2019 levels and many live-action titles underperforming. Family sequels such as Moana 2, Wicked: For Good and Zootopia 2 have supplied rare breakouts, though analysts in Beijing and Los Angeles caution that the sequel’s success may represent a franchise-specific surge rather than a broad reset of U.S. studio fortunes in China.
Tracking sites now place Zootopia 2 among the top 10 global releases of 2025, edging past recent tentpoles and closing in on the year’s live-action leaders, with its $150 million production cost already covered multiple times over. Strong audience grades, including an “A” from CinemaScore and high PostTrak scores, point to durable play through the December holidays, raising expectations that Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde will steer Disney Animation back into the billion-dollar conversation.
