Vin Diesel took the stage at NBCUniversal’s annual upfront presentation in New York Monday and declared that Peacock was launching four Fast & Furious television series — a claim that sources inside the company immediately walked back, confirming only one scripted show is actually in active development.
Diesel, appearing alongside Tonight Show host Jimmy Fallon at Radio City Music Hall, told the advertising audience: “The news that I have here today is that Peacock is launching four shows from the ‘Fast and Furious’ universe.” Within hours, an individual with knowledge of the situation confirmed that only one series has been formally set up at Peacock, with additional projects sitting in various earlier stages of development at Universal TV.
Plot details remain under wraps. Mike Daniels — who also has the Rockford Files reboot in his portfolio — and Wolfe Coleman serve as co-showrunners and executive producers and will write the pilot. Both previously collaborated on Shades of Blue. The confirmed show hails from Universal Television.
The executive producer lineup mirrors the franchise’s core production hierarchy: Diesel and Sam Vincent produce via One Race, franchise veteran Neal Moritz and Pavun Shetty through Original Film, with Jeff Kirschenbaum and screenwriter Chris Morgan, who wrote several of the films, also on board.
Diesel attributed his willingness to bring the franchise to television to a structural change at Universal. He said the move became viable once Donna Langley took oversight of NBCUniversal’s TV operations, telling the crowd it was then that he knew “the integrity of the characters, the international appeal, what makes us all feel like family would be protected in the TV space.”
The franchise turns 25 this year, with Diesel and Moritz attending a special anniversary screening of the original film at the Cannes Film Festival. The 11th and final theatrical chapter, titled Fast Forever, is set for release on March 17, 2028. Across ten films to date, the series has grossed more than $7 billion worldwide, making it Universal’s longest-running and most profitable franchise.
This marks the franchise’s first live-action television venture. Diesel, Moritz, and Morgan previously executive produced Fast & Furious Spy Racers, an animated series that ran six seasons on Netflix from 2019 to 2021, and there is a separate animated Fast & Furious series in development at Netflix from DreamWorks Animation.
