‘Sweet Magnolias’ Creator Bids Farewell to Serenity: ‘Keep Pouring It Out!’

Sheryl J. Anderson, creator and showrunner of “Sweet Magnolias,” bid farewell to the fictional town of Serenity on Saturday, a day after Netflix’s cancellation of the romantic drama became public.

In an Instagram post, Anderson called the five-season run “a privilege and a blessing” and thanked the writers, cast, crew and fans whose passion for the characters kept the show going. She closed with the series’ signature toast: “Keep pouring it out!”

The show debuted on Netflix in May 2020, adapted from Sherryl Woods’ novels. It follows three lifelong friends, Maddie (JoAnna Garcia Swisher), Dana Sue (Brooke Elliott) and Helen (Heather Headley), as they juggle romance, family and careers in Serenity, South Carolina. The run totals 50 episodes, and the fifth season premiered June 11.

Viewership helps explain the outcome. Deadline reported that season five drew 2.8 million views in its opening week, 30 percent below the season four premiere, then rose to 3.5 million in its first full week and left Netflix’s Top 10 after three weeks. Netflix also skipped its usual step of commissioning a writers’ room for a sixth season ahead of time. Deadline called the decline modest by Netflix’s standards this year and noted the show was made on a modest budget.

A competing project also shaped the decision. Netflix reportedly weighed a sixth and final season against “Ladies of the House,” a new drama from Anderson and Swisher, and chose the new series. Loosely based on Lauren Edmondson’s novel, it follows a winery owner’s widow and two adult daughters as they confront the family business and each other after his sudden death. Swisher is set to executive produce and is expected to star.

Fans wanted more closure. Viewers on Reddit voiced frustration that the show ends without a proper finale, and some asked for a wrap-up movie. Season five closed with the characters’ usual margarita toast and several storylines open, with many viewers still hoping for a reunion between Annie and Ty. Anderson told Deadline in June that the finale aimed to pair unanswered questions with emotional payoff.
