Sony Pictures revealed on Twitter that filming has begun on the Gran Turismo movie, the movie adaptation of Polyphony Digital’s PlayStation racing series due out in the summer of next year.
This announcement was accompanied by the first official shot from the set, which, sadly, doesn’t show much. In fact, what we can see is the clapperboard being used by the production, replete with the Gran Turismo logo.
The backdrop is blurred, but we catch a glimpse of a series of racing cars approaching the starting line of a circuit.
The Gran Turismo film adaptation is inspired by a true story of a player in the Polyphony Digital series, Jann Mardenborough, whose winning a series of competitions in the game led him to becoming a professional racer in reality.

We understand that the film will feature Archie Madekwe (Les Miserables) as the title character, and Djimon Hounsou (In America – The Dream That Wasn’t There and Blood Diamond) and ex Spice Girls Geri Halliwell-Horner play his parents.
Also in the cast are Orlando Bloom, David Harbour (Sheriff Hopper from Stranger Things), Josha Stradowski (Amazon’s The Wheel of Time) as well as German actor Thomas Kretschman (he will be in the next Indiana Jones film).
The movie is directed by Neill Blomkamp, the director of District 9 and Elysium, and is written by Jason Hall and Zach Baylan. Hall is also serving as executive director alongside Polyphony Digital boss Kazunori Yamauchi.
The Gran Turismo film is scheduled to debut in U.S. theaters on August 11, 2023.
