Elon Musk has waded into Hollywood discourse by attacking Christopher Nolan over a rumored casting choice in The Odyssey. In a reply on X, Musk wrote that “Chris Nolan has lost his integrity,” reacting to a post that claimed Lupita Nyong’o will play Helen of Troy. Variety reported the remark and noted Nyong’o’s role has not been confirmed.
Nyong’o joined the ensemble cast in late 2024, with her character kept under wraps as the studio and filmmakers held plot details close. Universal Pictures has described the project as a “mythic action epic” shot around the world using new IMAX film technology, with the film set for a July 17, 2026 theatrical release.
The blowback to Musk’s comment landed in a familiar pressure point: how closely a modern adaptation should track ancient descriptions, and who gets to embody iconic mythic figures. Online critics framed the rumored Helen casting as a break from traditional depictions; defenders countered that epic poetry has lived through constant reinvention, from stage to screen, and that fan claims have raced ahead of confirmed information.
The controversy also comes as Nolan’s production sells itself on physical scale. In a recent interview recapped by The Guardian, Nolan said the team spent months filming at sea and shot more than 2 million feet of film, while star Matt Damon praised the experience in comments to the same outlet. IMAX has also tied the film to technical experimentation, with IMAX CEO Rich Gelfond saying Nolan pushed the company toward lighter, quieter cameras for the shoot.
