Matthew Rhys Leads Apple TV’s Cursed-Island Horror Comedy Widow’s Bay

The 10-episode series from Katie Dippold and Hiro Murai premieres April 29, with Rhys playing a mayor trying to sell tourists on a town locals believe is cursed.

Matthew Rhys will lead Apple TV’s new 10-episode series Widow’s Bay, a horror comedy that sends the Emmy-winning actor into a cursed New England island town where civic boosterism runs headfirst into ghosts, folklore and public embarrassment. The series debuts globally April 29 with two episodes, then continues weekly through June 17, with a two-episode drop set for May 27.

Rhys stars as Mayor Tom Loftis, a mainlander trying to revive a struggling community cut off by spotty reception, weak infrastructure and a reputation that terrifies outsiders. Apple’s description frames Tom as desperate for respect and determined to turn the island into a tourist destination for the sake of his teenage son, even as residents insist the place carries a curse.

The series comes from creator and executive producer Katie Dippold, with Hiro Murai directing and executive producing. Apple held a New York premiere on April 22 at Regal Union Square, where Rhys appeared with Murai, Dippold and cast members including Stephen Root, Kate O’Flynn, Kingston Rumi Southwick, Kevin Carroll, Dale Dickey, Jeff Hiller and K Callan.

Dippold and Murai have positioned the show as a risky tonal swing rather than a standard genre exercise. In a recent interview, Dippold said Apple backed the project after hearing a pitch that leaned into horror and comedy without a simple comparison point, while Murai said the streamer “didn’t flinch.” The show’s influences include coastal terror, local myth and creature-driven scares, with the island set 40 miles off New England.

For Rhys, Widow’s Bay marks a sharper comic turn after years of intense television roles, from The Americans to Perry Mason and The Beast in Me. He called the project a “big-swing” move and said its outsider theme connected with his own experience as a Welsh actor living in the United States. That angle gives the series a clear acting hook: a comic mayor trying to sell a town that may be impossible to save.
