Na Hong-jin’s Hope Sets September Release After Cannes Buzz

The Korean filmmaker’s first feature since The Wailing arrives after a divisive Cannes debut, major international sales and early talk of a sequel.

Na Hong-jin’s Hope will open in North American theaters on Sept. 9, giving Neon an early fall launch for one of the year’s highest-profile Korean genre films after its Cannes premiere turned the director’s long-awaited return into a major festival talking point.

The sci-fi thriller marks Na’s first feature since The Wailing in 2016 and his first film to compete for the Palme d’Or. Cannes selected Hope for its main competition in April, placing Na back at the festival where The Chaser, The Yellow Sea and The Wailing helped build his international reputation. The new film runs 160 minutes and expands his taste for dread, moral panic and procedural tension into large-scale creature cinema.

Set in the remote South Korean village of Hope Harbor near the Demilitarized Zone, the film follows police chief Bum-seok, played by Hwang Jung-min, and officer Sung-ae, played by Hoyeon, after a mysterious creature disrupts the community. Zo In-sung plays Sung-ki, a local hunter drawn into the search. The cast also includes Taylor Russell, Cameron Britton, Alicia Vikander and Michael Fassbender, with the latter two playing alien figures in a story that shifts from rural investigation to cosmic threat.

At Cannes, Na said the project took eight years to complete and described the process as difficult enough that it sometimes felt like “hitting a brick wall.” He also said he has already written a possible sequel and wants to extend the story, a striking declaration for a film whose first chapter has yet to reach public audiences.

Festival reaction placed Hope among the most divisive spectacles of the competition. Some viewers praised its scale, velocity and unruly genre ambition. Others questioned the length, tonal swings and visual effects in a film reported to rank among South Korea’s most expensive productions. The debate may help Neon, which has built a strong recent record with international auteurs and Cannes titles, sell Hope as an event rather than a standard genre release.

The film has already gained wide international traction. Mubi acquired rights across Latin America, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, Spain and Turkey before the Cannes premiere, signaling confidence in Na’s name and the cast’s global reach. With a September date now set, Hope moves from festival sensation to one of the fall’s key theatrical tests for Korean cinema in North America.
