Universal’s horror film “Other Mommy” is on course for a $24 million domestic opening this weekend, while Sony’s “The Social Reckoning” is tracking toward single digits, according to projections gathered by TheWrap.
Rob Savage directs “Other Mommy,” with Jessica Chastain playing both a worried mother and the menacing double who stalks her daughter. A $24 million start would match the $23.6 million debut of “The Black Phone,” which finished with $90 million domestically and $161 million worldwide. Theatrical sources see a path to $30 million if reviews and early audience response run strong. Box Office Theory’s range is $28.5 million to $35 million, while a September forecast from Boxoffice Pro was lower, at $15 million to $25 million.
The release matters to Blumhouse-Atomic Monster. The studio has scored with franchise sequels, and founder Jason Blum and producer James Wan both hold credits on this year’s horror hits “Obsession” and “Backrooms.” Original horror has been harder. Films such as “Wolf Man,” “Drop” and “The Woman in the Yard” avoided big losses on small budgets in 2025 but launched no franchises. Competition from “Resident Evil” and DC’s “Clayface” could limit how long “Other Mommy” holds its audience.
Sorkin’s film faces tougher odds. TheWrap projects roughly $8 million from about 2,500 theaters, the same as last weekend’s “Digger” and less than half of the $22.4 million “The Social Network” earned in 2010. World of Reel puts the range at $4 million to $6 million, and Boxoffice Pro at $6 million to $10 million.
Aaron Sorkin writes and directs this story of whistleblower Frances Haugen, played by Mikey Madison, and Wall Street Journal reporter Jeff Horwitz, played by Jeremy Allen White. Jeremy Strong replaces Jesse Eisenberg as Mark Zuckerberg. Sorkin told Vanity Fair he spent three days trying to bring Eisenberg back, saying the role “belonged to him.” Early critic reactions, reported by Variety, ranged from positive to mixed.
TheWrap’s analysis cites a reported net budget near $40 million, with other outlets saying $50 million. It says Sony can absorb a loss after the billions from “Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” and that political and current-events films have struggled to find audiences since the pandemic.
