Exploring the 'Spider-Man 4' Role That Almost Was and Hathaway's Iconic Turn as Catwoman.

Anne Hathaway, a versatile actress known for her wide range of roles, came very close to entering the Spider-Man universe. In what could have been a significant turn in her career, Hathaway was set to play Felicia Hardy, also known as Black Cat, in Sam Raimi’s “Spider-Man 4.” However, the project’s cancellation by Sony led her down a different superhero path.

In Sam Raimi’s envisioned “Spider-Man 4,” Hathaway’s character, Black Cat, is a complex figure. Known for her conflicted persona in the comics, Black Cat is a villain who falls for Spider-Man but not his alter ego, Peter Parker.

Her backstory includes overcoming a traumatic assault, leading her to train in combat and acrobatics, and she possesses the ability to create probability fields that bring ‘bad luck’ to her enemies. Hathaway’s portrayal of this character would have added a new dimension to the Spider-Man saga.

From Spider-Man to The Dark Knight

The cancellation of “Spider-Man 4” opened a new door for Hathaway. Reflecting on the turn of events in The Happy Sad Confused Podcast, Hathaway pondered whether her involvement in Raimi’s project might have influenced Christopher Nolan’s decision when casting for “The Dark Knight Rises.”

Ultimately, Hathaway was free to take on the role of Selina Kyle, aka Catwoman, in Nolan’s critically acclaimed film. Her performance as Catwoman was widely praised and remains a memorable part of her filmography.

“Spider-Man 4’s” cancellation had significant ripple effects in the superhero genre. Following mixed reviews of “Spider-Man 3” and Raimi’s dissatisfaction with the film, Sony decided to reboot the Spider-Man franchise. This led to Andrew Garfield taking up the mantle of Peter Parker in a new series.

This series had two installments before Marvel reacquired Spider-Man rights, leading to the character’s integration into the MCU with “Spider-Man: Homecoming” and the eventual multiverse reunion in “Spider-Man: No Way Home.”

Hathaway’s Current Endeavors

Despite missing out on the role in “Spider-Man 4,” Hathaway’s career continues to flourish. She is currently starring in the psychological thriller “Eileen,” showcasing her ability to delve into diverse and challenging roles.

Her journey in the realm of superhero films, although taking a different path than initially expected, highlights her versatility and adaptability as an actress.

Anne Hathaway’s near-casting in “Spider-Man 4” and her eventual role as Catwoman in “The Dark Knight Rises” demonstrate the often unpredictable nature of film casting, especially in the ever-evolving world of superhero cinema.
