Picture this: you’ve got your hoe in hand, the soil is tilled, and your crops are ready to sprout for the season. But instead of watering and tending to pixelated plants, you’re immersed in rows upon rows of itty bitty squares begging to be filled in. Welcome to the unexpected pairing of farming life simulation and picross puzzles that is Piczle Cross: Story of Seasons.

You likely know about the ultra popular Story of Seasons games (previously called Harvest Moon), where you inherit a dilapidated farm and rebuild it into a thriving homestead. Piczle Cross takes the charming characters, tools, crops, and animals from the farming franchise and injects them into picross puzzle grids. For the uninitiated, picross (also known as nonograms) tasks players with using number hints on each row and column to deduce which squares to fill in. Gradually, an image emerges right before your eyes. Satisfying doesn’t even begin to describe it.

It’s a zany combo, no doubt. But the gameplay loop of completing grids to reveal hints of farm life is oddly satisfying. Don’t expect to actually run your own farm here though. Piczle Cross is first and foremost arobust picross puzzle collection ranging from bite-sized to sprawling. With over 300 head-scratchers to plow through and adjustable difficulty settings, both brain teaser veterans and greenhorns are sure to feel at home. Picross and farming might sound as likely a pairing as tomatoes and chocolate, but the two blend together remarkably well. So let’s till these puzzle fields and see what crops up!

Revisiting Old Farming Friends

While the farming life simulation takes a backseat to puzzles, Piczle Cross finds plenty of wholesome ways to celebrate fan favorite elements of Story of Seasons. The slowly evolving farm backdrop pays tribute to the franchise’s signature pastoral aesthetic beautifully. And the unlockable archives offer a treasure trove of nostalgic profiles, concept art, and release data sure to delight long-time farming followers.

Seeing iconic characters like Pete the friendly postal worker and harvest goddess the Oracle rendered in charming pixel portraits plastered a grin across my face every time. It feels like catching up with beloved old pals. Mining grids would reveal a tiny stipple version of the Harvest Goddess or Flora the fashionable merchant from Animal Parade. Even obscure characters fans may have forgotten about over the years make appearances that sent me down memory lane.

My only gripe is that some entries in the series get highlighted more than others. You’ll uncover a plethora of pixel people and items pulled from fan favorite farming chapters like Friends of Mineral Town. Yet later releases such as Trio of Towns or Light of Hope see little love. As someone who fondly remembers those 3DS and mobile journeys, I would have enjoyed seeing puzzly homages to those worlds too.

But minor omissions aside, Piczle Cross admirably showcases much of what makes Story of Seasons so universally beloved. It may not give you a farm to directly shape like in the simulation series, but subtle pastoral touches paired with Archives trivia tidbits make this perfect for longtime franchise fans thirsty for a farming fix with a puzzle twist. Now if you’ll excuse me, I have some chicken feed to picross!

Puzzling Your Way Through the Fields

Alright, hoes down and thinking caps on — it’s time to dig into the meat and potatoes of Piczle Cross: its picross puzzle gameplay. For the uninitiated, picross tasks you with using number hints to logically fill in a grid to create a picture. It’s part logic puzzle, part pixel art guesswork.

Piczle Cross: Story of Seasons Review

Each picross grid starts out empty, with numbers along the top and side indicating how many consecutive squares you need to fill in per row or column. You’ll start marking squares you know for certain need filling based on these numbers as anchors. If a column has a “4” hint, you know you need to color in a group of 4 together somewhere in that column.

This deducing through process of elimination is the addicting picross flow state. Once you make progress filling in one row or column, it gives you more hints to work off of in intersecting ones. Slowly but surely, the full picture starts Coming together as you rule out incorrect spots. It’s immensely satisfying to see a grid go from vacuum of emptiness to completed pixel scene.

Of course, Piczle Cross doesn’t leave you totally high and dry. Optional assistance features like mistake checking and automatic notes are handy helps when you get stuck. You can fine tune the experience to your preferred difficulty too. Want a real brain buster? Turn assists off and go in free hand. Or enable every possible aid if you just want to casually unwind with some puzzling.

In total, Piczle Cross contains over 300 puzzles of varying sizes and complexity. You’ll start out on cozy 10×10 grids before working up to more epic mosaics. Along the way, you’ll unlock 5 unique “Collage” puzzles which combine small interlocking grids into one gigantic one.

These collages are easily the most rewarding to complete. There’s something about slowly filling in piece by piece of a puzzle spread to see a full scene come together that’s inexplicably magical. Think of it like putting together a jigsaw, but, you know…with picross.

It may not reach the fine tuned polish of Nintendo’s Picross series, but make no mistake — Piczle Cross holds its own as a competent puzzler. The cursor might feel a tad sluggish, and the lack of touch controls is a missed opportunity. But the sheer volume of head-scratchers here should keep your noggin noodling for hours on end. Just don’t be surprised if you start dreaming about numbers and squares after an extended session!

A Heartwarming Homage to the Farming Series

Even if the farming simulation aspects are slim, the Story of Seasons soul permeates Piczle Cross’ entire presentation and aesthetic. This isn’t just aPicross game parading famous characters for quick brand recognition. From audio touches to unlockables, it’s clear there’s real reverence for the long-running franchise here.

Piczle Cross: Story of Seasons Review

Every picross grid completed reveals a new piece of pixel art celebrating some element of Story of Seasons’ wholesome world. You’ll uncover portraits of fan favorite villagers, tools like fishing rods and milk pales, crops ranging from pumpkins to pineapples, livestock like plump hens and wooly sheep, and so much more iconic imagery.

It’s a lovely stroll down memory lane whether you just nibbled on the farming series or are a ride-or-die hardcore fan. I couldn’t help but audibly “aww” when unlocking a puzzle depicting adorable alpacas or potted flowers. The pixels positively pop with vibrant charm.

In the background as you puzzle, a charming polygonal farm continually evolves from barren wasteland to pastoral paradise. Crops grow in and structures improve bit by bit with each day/grid finished. It’s a subtle yet rewarding way to represent your progress. Attentive ears will also notice iconic Harvest Moon musical motifs and nostalgic sound effects sprinkled throughout. The audio backdrop alone sparked fond recollections of bygone virtual farm days.

The more grids completed, the more you uncover in the Archives section too. Here lies a treasure trove of concept art, character profiles, and release info celebrating Story of Seasons’ legacy. Perusing pages bursting with franchise facts makes it apparent the developers weren’t just leveraging the IP — they genuinely adore it.

You can also kick back and listen to a heavenly mixtape of tunes spanning the entire series in the music player. Cue up calm pastoral themes from Save the Homeland or cheerful notes from Tale of Two Towns to fully immerse yourself in cozy farming nostalgia.

While the farming and puzzle gameplay don’t fully intertwine, that unusual pairing is part of Piczle Cross’ quirky charm. And the sheer heart poured into honoring Story of Seasons’ spirit through presentation makes up for the disjointed genres. This isn’t some cheap licensed cash grab — it’s a loving tribute puzzling fans and farming fanatics alike can appreciate.

A Fresh Take on Brain Teasers

At the end of the day, Piczle Cross: Story of Seasons doesn’t reinvent the wheel when it comes to picross puzzling. But it does offer a wonderfully weird, lighthearted new coat of paint thanks to its unlikely farming crossover. This isn’t going to dethrone the acclaimed Picross S series anytime soon. However, with over 300 hand-crafted head-scratchers and adjustable assists catering to all skill levels, it makes for an accessible and addictive picross package.

Piczle Cross: Story of Seasons Review

The lack of touch controls and sluggish cursor keep it from reaching puzzle puzzling greatness. And while the Story of Seasons backdrop offers some fan service, a few more direct farming life integrations could have made the mashup more cohesive. But minor nitpicks aside, Piczle Cross remains wholesome good fun whether you’re a puzzle junkie or just looking to relax.

Fans of the farming franchise should get an extra kick out of unlocking pixel art and facts celebrating their favorite entries too. But even newcomers are sure to be won over by the warm presentational charm. In an era where franchises are endlessly reinvented and rebranded, this quaint picross rendition feels like a hearty homecooked meal for the soul.

If you’ve got room for yet another cozy puzzler in your game rotation, join this unexpected union between logic and agriculture. Just don’t blame me if you start dreaming of picross grids and turnips after a few lengthy sessions tilling these puzzle fields!

The Review

Piczle Cross: Story of Seasons

8 Score

It’s certainly an odd coupling, but the warm and fuzzy Story of Seasons vibes pair delightfully well with compelling picross puzzle progression in Piczle Cross.
