The new Karate Kid movie renaissance has been slightly postponed, but that delay could actually confirm some tantalizing fan speculation. Sony Pictures recently pushed back the release date for its currently untitled Karate Kid sequel from December 2024 to May 30, 2025, citing production delays on Netflix’s Cobra Kai as the cause.
This six-month shift doesn’t just represent a rescheduling inconvenience. According to the studio, filming and release delays for Cobra Kai’s upcoming sixth and final season have made a 2024 launch “impossible” for the new Karate Kid movie. That seems to substantiate a popular fan theory that the Netflix series’ climactic finale will directly set up and lay narrative groundwork for the events of the 2025 film revival.
“Ever since the announcement of a Karate Kid movie starring [Ralph] Macchio and [Jackie] Chan…it has been theorized that the plot of this movie would be set up by Cobra Kai season 6,” wrote ScreenRant’s Eric Cline. “Since the movie can’t proceed until Cobra Kai streams, this theory seems to be confirmed.”
The film, which will reunite original Karate Kid stars Macchio and Chan over 30 years after 2010’s revisal entry, has been billed as taking place in the same continuity as the hugely popular Cobra Kai series. While plot details are still tightly under wraps, the delay “likely involves Chan’s character, Mr. Han, appearing in the final installment, thus allowing him to meet Macchio’s Daniel and create a connection between the 2010 movie and Cobra Kai for the upcoming Karate Kid to build from,” theorized Cline.
Such a pivotal connective tissue between Cobra Kai’s established mythology and the new Karate Kid’s fresh story makes logical sense. The scrappy YouTube-turned-Netflix series has been widely praised for deftly continuing the original Karate Kid films’ spirit and character arcs in an organic, engaging manner. Leveraging that good will and direct setup could help instantly ingratiate the upcoming 2025 movie with the existing passionate fanbase.
“Despite Chan’s beloved status as an actor, 2010’s The Karate Kid didn’t live up to the original movies in the same way Cobra Kai did,” admits Cline. “For another movie featuring Mr. Han to be a success, prospective audiences will need to be assured that it will be as good as Cobra Kai.”
By firmly establishing connections to Cobra Kai’s rich narrative tapestry in its farewell season, the new Karate Kid film can more viably promise that same level of quality and canonicity to viewers. The six month delay will reportedly allow Macchio to fulfill his filming obligations on Cobra Kai’s finale before moving onto the movie which will pair his Daniel LaRusso with Chan’s Mr. Han as mentors.
