As anticipation builds for the second season of HBO’s hit “Game of Thrones” prequel series “House of the Dragon,” the show’s stars have offered a glimpse into the personal and political turmoil that will consume the Targaryen family in the episodes to come.
At the series’ New York premiere, the cast members revealed that the close-knit dynamic seen in season one will give way to more individual storylines and separation, much to their disappointment.
“It was kind of lonely,” admitted Emma D’Arcy, who plays the role of Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen. “There’s so many beautiful actors on the show, it’s an ever-mutating thing.” D’Arcy noted that the separation from co-stars like Matt Smith (Prince Daemon) and Olivia Cooke (Alicent Hightower) made them appreciate their on-screen reunions all the more.
Indeed, the rift between Rhaenyra and Alicent, once the closest of friends, has only deepened. Cooke described Alicent as being “f**king terrified” as her son Aegon’s claim to the Iron Throne puts her on a collision course with Rhaenyra. The devastating death of Rhaenyra’s son Lucerys at the hands of Alicent’s son Aemond has severed any remaining bond between the two women.
For Daemon, his journey in season two will take him down a darker, more unstable path. As Matt Smith explained, “He sort of tumbles down towards the abyss. A lot of the things you know about him become slightly unstuck. He unravels, essentially, it’s like a piece of yarn tumbling away in the wind a bit. He sort of loses his mind a bit.”
The cast’s insights hint at a season filled with personal anguish and the looming threat of all-out war. As Emma D’Arcy noted, the showrunners have crafted a narrative where “grief powerfully drives the narrative,” making the Targaryen civil war all the more agonizing and intense.
Phia Saban, who plays Helaena Targaryen, further teased the dark themes to come, describing season two in just three words: “rats, blood, bugs.” This ominous description adds to the sense of foreboding and upheaval that will define the next chapter of “House of the Dragon.”
With the cast members clearly missing the camaraderie of season one, fans can expect the relationships and alliances within the Targaryen dynasty to be pushed to their breaking point. As the characters are flung across Westeros, the resulting conflicts and personal tragedies will undoubtedly make for riveting, if heartbreaking, television when “House of the Dragon” returns to HBO this summer.
