Mishal Husain, a longtime BBC presenter, was puzzled by Meghan Markle’s take on their 2017 engagement interview. In Meghan and Harry’s Netflix series, Meghan said the interview seemed “rehearsed” and that they weren’t able to share their own story.
Husain recently spoke to Saga magazine about what she remembers from that day. She said when Meghan called it an “orchestrated reality show,” she didn’t know what to think. To Husain, it looked like Meghan and Harry were excited to talk about their relationship and future together.
During the interview, which happened right after their engagement was announced, Meghan and Harry opened up about how they met and fell in love. But now Meghan says they had to do a press event first and then the interview right after, so it felt more like a performance than a real discussion.
Husain said she saw things differently, though. To her, Meghan and Harry seemed happy and ready to share what getting married would mean, especially for Meghan. Nothing seemed off or like something bad would happen later on. Husain thought the couple was full of joy for each other and what was ahead.
This disagreement between their views is similar to when Buckingham Palace said “some memories may vary” after Meghan and Harry’s interview with Oprah. They talked about experiencing racism in the Royal Family.
As Meghan and Harry keep speaking out about media treatment, discussions with reporters like Husain stay positive. But their perspectives clash, showing how coverage divides people and adds to tensions over the Sussexes’ split from royal work. Both sides see things differently, and finding agreement will take more open talks.
