Renowned actor Denzel Washington hinted he may start taking on fewer acting jobs in the future, even as he commits to a leading role in director Ridley Scott’s sequel to the 2000 film Gladiator.
In a recent interview, the two-time Oscar winner said he’s becoming more selective in the projects he chooses and is focusing more on work behind the camera. However, Scott’s passion for filmmaking inspired Washington to take part in Gladiator II.
Washington said in an interview with Empire magazine that he’s interested in fewer acting roles as his career progresses. The veteran of over 40 years in the industry explained he’s drawn to roles that excite him. Despite this, the 86-year-old Scott’s enthusiasm for cinema made the upcoming Gladiator sequel too compelling to pass up.
Washington has previously collaborated with Scott, starring in the 2007 crime drama American Gangster. He praised Scott’s ongoing drive at his age, saying “He’s engaged. He’s excited about life and his next film. He’s an inspiration.”
Gladiator II is set for release on November 22, 2024. Scott called it “one of the best things I’ve ever made,” while acknowledging he’s directed several successful films. The sequel continues the story years after the original, following a character introduced as a child who witnessed the death of Russell Crowe’s character Maximus.
Washington plays a wealthy Roman with power over gladiators. Though one of his last major roles, Washington’s participation shows the impact an inspiring director can have on an acclaimed actor’s career choices late in his illustrious run.
