Grand Theft Auto VI (GTA 6) has yet to be officially announced, but it already ranks as one of the most eagerly awaited upcoming games. If recent whispers are accurate, it might also become the most expensive game ever produced in the gaming industry’s history.
Record-Breaking Development Costs
According to Dexerto, the development of GTA 6 is anticipated to cost between $1-2 billion, dwarfing the budgets of well-known titles such as Destiny ($500 million), Star Citizen ($500 million), and Cyberpunk 2077 (approximately $315 million). In 2021, a hacker responsible for leaking GTA 6 materials also mentioned a $2 billion budget.
While a $1-2 billion budget may seem astonishing, it’s worth noting that GTA 5 cost $250 million to develop, and since its 2013 release, the sophistication of game development and corresponding production costs have increased dramatically.
The former head of Sony Interactive Entertainment Worldwide Studios recently remarked that over the past 12 years, game production costs have multiplied by six, using the God of War series as an example.
Take-Two Interactive, the publisher behind the Grand Theft Auto franchise, is unlikely to skimp on the budget for the new GTA. Revenues from GTA 5 sales surpassed $1 billion within three days of its release, and the game continues to outsell most new releases.

Red Dead Redemption 2, another title developed by Rockstar Games, had a team of over 1,600 people working on it for eight years, with an estimated budget of $540 million. Some of these costs were dedicated to marketing, but it raises the question of how long this model of game development can be sustained.
While GTA 6 will undoubtedly recoup its expenses, it’s doubtful that any company other than Rockstar Games could afford to produce such costly games.
Paweł Sasko from CD Projekt RED recently addressed this issue, stating that high-budget game development is nearing the limit of its feasibility. He compared it to a wall that everyone will eventually collide with.
For this reason, many in the industry have high expectations for procedural content creation and AI tools that could significantly streamline game development.
These innovations could enable the production of more complex games at a reduced cost. Without such advancements, it’s difficult to envision the current pace of development being maintained.
