In a tantalizing tease, the director tapped to bring The Legend of Zelda to the big screen has offered a glimpse into his ambitious yet grounded vision for the live-action adaptation of Nintendo’s beloved fantasy series.
Wes Ball, whose eagerly awaited Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes hits theaters next week, is also hard at work developing the Zelda movie for Nintendo and co-financier Sony Pictures. While remaining tight-lipped about specifics, the filmmaker made it clear during a recent Reddit AMA that he intends to “work my ass off to make something great” for Zelda fans.
“Keep the money on the screen. Be ambitious. Be confident in the talent around you. Try to do something great,” Ball said, outlining lessons from Apes that will carry over to Zelda. “We’re working hard, and we’re gonna make something great.”
However, Ball also signaled a shift from his initial concept of creating a heavily motion-captured CGI fest akin to Avatar. Over a decade ago, shortly after Avatar’s release, he had tweeted, “the next big mo-cap Avatar-like movie should be… THE LEGEND OF ZELDA.”
Now, Ball is striving for a more “grounded” and “real” approach, seemingly favoring practical effects over an all-CGI animated style. In an interview with Polygon, he stated a “completely motion-capture Zelda film probably isn’t his choice” anymore.
“I want it to be grounded and real,” Ball elaborated, while still aiming to fulfill fans’ lofty dreams for the fantasy world of Hyrule.
This grounded tactic could differentiate the Zelda movie from Nintendo’s own dalliance with CGI animation in the middling 2023 Super Mario Bros. film. With such an iconic IP, Ball appears intent on striking a balanced mix of ambition and realism.
“If I said anything else [about Zelda details], Nintendo will pop out of the bushes here and like yank me away,” the director quipped.
Ball is collaborating closely with Nintendo legend Shigeru Miyamoto and producer Avi Arad on the project. And should the maiden Zelda film voyage prove successful, the filmmaker has already signaled his willingness to turn it into a franchise and “continue with the story and characters.”
While a release date and casting details remain tightly under wraps, Ball’s comments provide an intriguing glimpse into his vision – an ambitious yet grounded take on the landmark gaming series blending cutting-edge effects with a dose of reality. Fans worldwide eagerly await more clues for how this epic quest will unfold on the big screen.
