Vampire Survivors started as a surprise indie hit, tasking players with surviving hordes of monsters for as long as possible with automatically upgrading weapons. Through free updates and expansions purchasable for mere dollars, the gameplay just keeps getting richer.

Previous add-ons like Among Us and Emergency Meeting lifted the survival formula to new heights with creative collaborations. Now Operation Guns does the same with a most unlikely, but very welcome, partner: the run-and-gun classic Contra.

Beyond just adding fun weapons and levels from that series, this downloadable content exemplifies everything great about Vampire Survivors – more options to experiment with divergent playstyles, compelling reasons to dive back in for just one more run, and a masterful mix of existing mechanics with inspired new ideas. Both longtime fans and those new to the survival sensation will find much to appreciate in Operation Guns.

Contra Bring More to Survive With

Operation Guns stacks up the content for fans of both Vampire Survivors and Contra. It comes loaded with 11 characters plucked straight from the run-and-gun classics. Course favorites Bill and Brad are ready for action, alongside all sorts of mechanized enemies. Unlock them by progressing through the new stages and evolving specific weapons.

Speaking of which, there’s a whopping 22 new weapons to experiment with. Some are instantly recognizable like the piercing laser or bouncing grenades. But each has its own feel reflected in delightful animations. Evolve arms through combinations with power-ups dropped in levels. This evolution system fosters strategic thinking in building a destructive arsenal.

Two additional stages also join the fray. Massive jungle landscape Neo Galuga serves as the starting point. Trek across its varied terrain filled with scrappy machine invaders. Also included is the motorcycle mayhem of Hectic Highway. Veer side to side blasting baddies as the road rolls endlessly onwards. While a novelty, it shakes things up from standard Survivor stages.

In addition, Operation Guns comes with a new Adventure mode option. Here a curated selection of items are used to complete varied versions of Galuga with limitations lending themselves to certain strategies. It presents a fresh challenge for those seeking more survive ’em up action.

With so much added, content junkies will be satisfied. The weapons, characters, and stages combine Contra’s DNA with Survivor’s proven formula. It makes for perfect partner content enhancing the minute-hogging experience. No vampires may be found, but with this import of interstellar invaders, survival just got a whole lot more off-world.

Invading Galuga

Poncle crafted a loving tribute to the Contra galaxy with Neo Galuga. This sprawling stage pulls players into the heart of the alien conflict. Its design immerses you in the franchise’s world from the start.

Vampire Survivors: Operation Guns DLC Review

The map flows smoothly between biomes. Jungle foliage and crumbling cities emerge from the same living landscape. Wastelands spread between, pockmarked with pods that spawn reinforcements for the ongoing battle. This convergence spotlights Contra’s seamless blending of settings.

Enemies also crossover boundaries. Robots march through the jungle alongside biomechanical monsters. Familiar Contra foes spawn constantly to assault your position. Screen-filling bosses materialize to really test your firepower. These threats immerse you in the feel of a Contra mission.

Power-ups scattered about boost your abilities just as in the classic games. Missiles obliterate everything while smart bombs clear tight situations. Healing orbs maintain your offensive. Subtle translations like this tie Galuga firmly to the franchise’s DNA.

Exploring rewards your growing arsenal. Hidden areas with items and shortcuts reward those who stray from the main path. Objectives also prompt discovery by tasking you to locate signs of the invasion. These small touches enhance Galuga’s interactive storytelling.

Between the beautiful scenery, relentless enemies, and helpful pickups, playing on Galuga feels just like participating in a Contra operation. Its sprawling openness pairs well with Vampire Survivors’ formula. Even 30 minutes in, new areas remain to uncover off the beaten track.

Galuga proves a wonder to survive upon. Its blending of varied biomes and subtle narrative hooks make every moment enjoyable while respecting the series. For fans of the run-and-gun or Vampire Survivors, Neo Galuga delivers conflict and chaos in spades.

Contra’s Arsenal

Poncle packed the Operation Guns DLC with iconic firearms plucked straight from the Contra universe. Over 20 new weapons join your arsenal, each bearing authentic animations and effects showcasing their power.

Vampire Survivors: Operation Guns DLC Review

Early unlocks like the Spread Gun introduce the simple joy of mowing down hordes. It unleashes a spread of piercing blasts with each trigger pull. Expanding it into the Multi-Launcher markedly boosts its crowd control.

Others require adapting your playstyle. The Lightning strikes a single foe but demands facing enemies as it charges. Evolving it into the Thunder Beam multiplies its damage yet constraints movement.

Not all prove winners. The Short Gun coughs out a measly projectile, no matter its Prototype B evolution. Its short range means constant repositioning for minimal payoff.

The real test lies in evolving weapons via experimentation. Finding which passive upgrades synergize starts the fun of toppling objectives. The classic Missile obliterates all in its path upon reaching max level.

Progress halts at Weapon Lockers scattered across the maps. These briefly boost a arm’s power, encouraging strategic usage. Snagging the right Locker at the right time unlocks evolutionary branches.

Maxing out weapons sees them shine in unique ways. The Metal Claw tears through the horde with its sweeping swipes. The Shockwave emits a rising tide of destruction swelling out from its blasts.

Some demand patience to reach their potential. The Repeater evolves from a single shot to a rapid-fire rage, mowing down all before triggering a smart bomb. The payoff proves worth the wait.

While a few prove misses, most channels Contra’s action perfectly. Their escalating devastation keeps runs intense right until the encroaching final minutes. For fans of high-octane destruction, Operation Guns delivers the goods.

Contra Classics

Poncle packed this DLC with a wonderful cast of characters pulled straight from the Contra series. Eleven in all, each with their own moves and loadouts to craft unique playstyles.

Vampire Survivors: Operation Guns DLC Review

First to unlock is Bill Rizer, the legendary soldier known for his hearty blast of the Long Gun. It’s a reliable if basic choice to start exploring Neo Galuga. After Bill, you’ll find others like the rapid fire prowess of Allen O’Neil or Lance Bean’s laser focusing.

For crowd control, Probotector and Ariana shine with their multi-hitting options. Probotector rains explosive bolts, while Ariana unleashes a flaming dance of death. Want defense? Gustof offers a reflective shield to turn attacks back on the horde.

Some lend extra layers of strategy. Lucia demands facing foes to channel her magic. But her powerful spells vaporize all in their path. Downpour sees you leaping between raindrops, finding new angles of attack.

Each character rewards experimenting to find their strengths. Brad Fang handles swarms with ease thanks to his all-consuming flame. Yet others like Bill provide stability to learn evolutions.

Progress lies in toppling goals with different builds. Survive Gunner’s gauntlet as rapid firing Allen, or channel Lucia’s magic across its length. Contra’s casts ensures fresh challenges, keeping runs engaging run after run.

Highway to Hell (Or Chaos)

Operation Guns shakes things up with Hectic Highway, putting you on a speeding motorcycle through nemesis-filled streets. It’s a thrilling change of pace from typical VS, even if not for everyone.

Vampire Survivors: Operation Guns DLC Review

You zoom down the highway lanes blasting baddies, weaving between oncoming traffic with rapid turns. Power-ups and weapons line the road, needing good timing to snatch. Miss and they’re gone for good, upping challenge to near-impossible evolutions.

While fresh, the stage loses VS’s classic exploratory feel. You’re locked forward at the mercy of the road, losing choice in enemies faced or direction taken. It makes for a tense, speedy run though. Graphics shift too – instead of lush backgrounds, it’s a blur of asphalt whizzing by.

Still, kudos to poncle for experimenting outside their comfort zone. Not all risks pay off, but it’s how creativity thrives. Hectic Highway shows their drive to keep surprising us, like Konami classics did with Contra’s level designs. Whether a favorite or not, it’s an option respecting players want options.

At its heart, VS excels giving room to roam as strength grows. So while Hectic Highway veers off course, its contra spirit shakes gameplay up just right – a bonus stage celebrating risks that built this series. And sometimes, variety alone is reason to rev those engines.

Missions of Masochism

Poncle crafted an extra way to survive Neo Galuga with Adventure Mode. Here, you face varied Galuga layouts with strict item limits like a true Contra soldier. Success means using every trick in your arsenal.

Vampire Survivors: Operation Guns DLC Review

Each run tasks you with different loadouts, maybe whips alone or knives with the occasional grenade. It’s way harder than standard runs! Enemies swarm thicker too. Balloons taunt just out of reach without magic, and laser beams shred if your timing’s off. You’ll die, again and again, learning enemy patterns frame-by-frame.

But slowly, strategies emerge. Lure robots into explosion circles while watching flanks. Toss down mines and hug walls where lasers can’t find you. Smash tanks to unleash missile storms on clusters below. Hit a rhythm, and survives stretch longer against tougher risks. Reward comes from creatively overcoming intense restrictions.

Adventures can last over an hour as play gets deep. I’ve replayed favorites like “Machinegun March” for its loadout limitations, and still uncover moments where quick thinking turns tides. Extra challenges surface too, like beating boss rushes consecutively. Each scenario brings discovery even for experienced survivors.

This mode triples down on what folks love about Vampire Survivors – tight, brutal twitch gameplay. It rewards learning every nuanced tool while weathering blistering challenge. For anyone hooked on constant improvement and high scores, Adventures provide a massive well of replay that feels fresh playthrough after playthrough. Contra soldiers, your next conquest awaits!

Crossing Streams

Poncle treated Contra fans by including some iconic tunes from the series. Neo Galuga echoes the alien invasion with remastered versions of tracks like the jungle theme. It’s like being transported back to our childhood living rooms.

Vampire Survivors: Operation Guns DLC Review

The graphics truly shine too. Weapons explode into colorful pixel particles just like they did on the NES. Characters smoothly tween between animations with classic 8-bit flair. It runs silky on any platform from mobile to Deck.

Some graphics standouts include the fireball weapon. Orange orbs drift with a warm glow before exploding into mini fireworks. So satisfying! Missiles also detonate beautifully. My personal favorite though is the laser. Its blue beam sweeps in tight rhythmic pulses with some accurate visual spread. Simply tactile.

Performance held strong during marathon sessions. On Xbox things stayed super smooth except for rare stutters during explosiveness. Switch held above 30FPS despite the chaos. Steam Deck performed beyond expectations too. Even late game with pixels flying faster than Silver Hawk, it maintained seamless visuals.

All told, Operation Guns captures the spirit of Contra while adding modern production values. The care taken with both the audiovisuals and optimization immerses us in nostalgia. Graphics, sound and performance come together in tight harmony. Fans both old and new can simply blast away without distraction – a testament to the crossover’s quality.

Nowhere to Run, Nowhere to Hide

Operation Guns delivers yet more top value gameplay from poncle. For just a couple bucks you’ll spend over a dozen hours unlocking everything through adventure mode alone. And that’s not counting time spent experimenting in regular runs! The longevity really shows the care put into each weapon, character and stage design.

Vampire Survivors: Operation Guns DLC Review

Contra fans will find plenty to love, from faithful remixes of classic tracks to recreations of the source material’s weaponry. Missiles spit and spread with pixel perfection. Scintillating special attacks erupt across the stage in a fireworks of enemies. It stays true to the speed and challenge of the franchises too. Survival means razor-sharp reflexes even late into runs.

But Operation Guns isn’t just for established fans. Newcomers find a wealth of content that enhances rather than alienates. Jumping in offers the same accessible and rewarding experience Vampire Survivors is known for. Getting to grips with another set of weapons to evolve keeps the synergies and strategies fresh.

Both groups will appreciate the shining production values. Fluid 60fps action across all platforms maintains the tension. Graphics electrify with faithful character animations and detailed effects. Play wherever and whenever the mood strikes.

Previous DLC showed poncle’s gift for creative collaborations. Operation Guns strengthens that while celebrating a beloved series. It expands the Survivors universe in a perfectly balanced way, just as we’ve come to expect. With every release the future looks brighter, so excitement is high for what’s next. Until then, this is a must-have for fans and the perfect on-ramp for newcomers. Now go, and may fortune favor the fearless! Your mission: survive!

The Review

Vampire Survivors: Operation Guns

9 Score

Vampire Survivors: Operation Guns is another exemplary DLC that delivers countless hours of engaging content for only a fraction of the cost. In paying homage to Contra through authentic weapons and stages, this crossover satisfies longtime fans while maintaining accessibility for newcomers. With its fast-paced action, wealth of unlockables, and silky-smooth performance across platforms, Operation Guns strengthens Poncle's already stellar formula. While not all additions gel perfectly, the overall package makes this a no-brainer that enhances the Survivors experience.
