Giancarlo Esposito, known for his portrayal of the menacing Moff Gideon in the hit Star Wars series “The Mandalorian,” has sparked excitement among fans by hinting at a potential return to the franchise. During a red carpet interview for his upcoming film “MaXXXine,” Esposito addressed speculation about his character’s fate and possible appearance in the upcoming movie “The Mandalorian and Grogu.”
When asked about reprising his role as the Darksaber-wielding villain, Esposito coyly replied, “Anything is possible.” While he clarified that he currently has no concrete information about a return to the Star Wars universe, the actor expressed his enthusiasm for working with “The Mandalorian” creator Jon Favreau and executive producer Dave Filoni again.
“I don’t know anything about it at present, but I put out there that if they need me, I’ll be there,” Esposito told Deadline. “I love what Jon Favreau, Dave Filoni, and Disney does with Mandalorian – and who knows? There may be a moment where I can swoop down and take over once again.”
Moff Gideon’s character arc in “The Mandalorian” concluded dramatically in the season three finale, with the villain seemingly perishing in an explosion on Mandalore. However, as many fans point out, the absence of a visible body leaves room for speculation about the character’s survival.
Esposito’s potential return would add to his impressive roster of iconic villains, including drug kingpin Gustavo Fring in “Breaking Bad” and “Better Call Saul,” Stan Edgar in “The Boys,” and voice roles in various animated productions and video games.
“The Mandalorian and Grogu,” directed by Favreau and co-written with Filoni, is scheduled for theatrical release on May 22, 2026. While plot details and cast information remain under wraps, the film is expected to continue the story of Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and his adorable green companion, Grogu.
As the Mandalorian universe expands with spin-offs like “The Book of Boba Fett” and the well-received “Ahsoka” series, fans eagerly anticipate news about familiar faces returning to the franchise. Whether Moff Gideon will be among them remains to be seen, but Esposito’s words have certainly fueled speculation and excitement within the Star Wars community.
